I was reading an interview of my Dad’s cousin - a WWII vet. In talking about food he said the rations were edible. But as a newbie in Europe he couldn’t figure out why he could score so many extra rations with pork.

Wrong. I raised several pigs back in the day in a good sized pen. They all crapped in one corner on the pen on the opposite side away from the food trough.
Sheep, cattle, horses, et al will crap on their food given half a chance. The only reason a pig would sleep or "root" in Sh!t is if they are forced to.
