Which John Wayne and WWII movie to introduce my kids to westerns and classic American films.

Posted on 01/19/2016 12:32:17 PM PST by Sparticus

So I was watching a movie with my kids (10 and 13) the other day and was thinking about how different the media is that they consume than from the stuff I was raised on.

I would like to get them interested in older movies with positive messages. Which John Wayne and which WWII movies are your favorites and which would think would grab kids' attention?

I'm thinking "The Cowboys" would be good, but what else would everyone suggest?

I did some theater productions with a guy who was in The Big Red One.

Re: The Cowboys

The true ending is not shown anymore and replaced with a more 'politically correct' ending,

Really? ...you are referring to him being killed?

Tora Tora Tora for WWII.

True Grit, Rooster Cogburn, The Sons of Katie Elder, McLintock, Rio Bravo … so many John Wayne movies to pick from.

Hitari, The Sons of Katy Elder, North to Alaska, Trainrobbers, The Quiet Man, Big Jake

These portray a light side of John Wayne in that they’re mostly dramas with lots of humor in them. They might like these if they like funny ones. Ok... Trainrobbers and Big Jake might not be that funny... but they’re two of my favorites.

“True Grit”, it’s the one where John Wayne’s daughter endorses Donald Trump.

McClintock!

The Duke shows his true conservative nature in that one plus it’s pretty funny.

He tells his daughter that she won’t be getting a big inheritance, he fights the government and their agents, his love of nature, and his fairness in dealing with other life problems.
