The words of excitement from Josh Bowmar of Bowmar Bowhunting after he speared a bear. Here's the crazy part: he did it with no blind, no guide, no backup weapon and from the ground, all on film. Here's Josh comment:
"I wanted to spear a bear without back up and the entire time we were there, the guide was telling me basically I was crazy because they had just recently heard of a guy being mauled by a bear. With that, I agreed, and every other time we hunted, we had a guide with us who carried a shotgun. However when we finished with Sarah's bear I spoke with the guide and because of the situation, he told me since it was pouring down rain and bears tend to be fair weather animals, if I wanted to take the chance and go hunt without backup, I could if I wanted to. He told me how bears are mostly curious so if one comes in just keep the spear out there and nudge him with it if need be. It was obvious neither of us expected a seven foot giant to come out and offer me a shot." See the video here.
Killing such a magnificent animal while its standing still eating form a steel drum full of guts hardly seems to be “sporting,” no matter what you kill it with.
The least he could have done was walk up to the bear and prod it with the spear so it would stand before spearing it.
Well, that sure tips the outcome in his favor!
Old school hunting.
I agree. I have a soft spot for bears.
In reading the article it appears that they never retrieved the bear, as rain had washed away all blood and it was getting dark. Sad.
My dad used to bowhunt for bear before I was born.
He never got one, but one never got him, either.
What the heck? The bear is bothering no one. Why on earth should this jerk just walk up to it and kill it painfully with a spear? I’m sure the “hunter” would love the feel of steel sliding into HIS vital organs.
Not really.
Ever throw a javelin? I tried in HS, and couldn't get the technique down, and my arm would end up aching.
Any way, the point is to "loft" the javelin for distance, not "rifle" it at a close target. Different skill set.
A good hunter makes a swift and clean kill, without causing the animal unnecessary pain. Use a rifle. This schmuck instead seems to want to return to a Roman Arena for a gladiator match with wild beasts. I suggest “spear chucker” satisfy his blood lust by venturing over to Iraq and join the Kurds in their fight. Make himself useful.
pretty much everything I’ve seen from that site is seasoned with a healthy dose of BS
Not that there are a lot of bears in Texas, but spear hunting is not a legal means of hunting here.
You and your facts are hateful. They’re Hate Facts!
Certainly his musculature and training gives him an enormous advantage over someone who lifts weights 12 liquid ounces at a time. Me, for instance.
If you aint gonna eat it or feed someone, or , need his body to survive why kill it? You could prove your mettle by feeding the poor or helping the sick. What a waste of time and lives
You are not the first FReeper who notes that there is something a tad “off” about that site.
I noticed it with the “Man Defends Family From Coyote” article a few weeks back, which was just odd and almost immoral, with some dudes chasing, killing, and doing high fives over the body of the coyote.
Hey I am definitely of the you can’t grill it til you kill it persuasion and from a family of hunters. This is not hunting its animal abuse. Beyond that its just hold muh beer stupid azz behavior.
He killed the bear, probably ate it too, tastes good.
Yeah, I bet that's exactly how things worked for tens of thousands of years, until the rifle was invented.
We're so lucky to have that modern tool to suddenly render everything so much more humane.
Sheesh...
I have never eaten bear.
I have a Biblical prohibition, that I just made up, against eating animals that eat meat. Folks say the meat of meat eaters tastes odd.
That said, I am open to suggestion in this area.
Ah, pigs are meat eaters, yanno.
