Originating in the late 50s, the Henry U.S. Survival AR-7 rifle was designed by Eugene Stoner who was known as the father of the AR-16. Eventually, the design was sold to other manufactures. Todays AR-7 .22 is manufactured solely in the U.S.and has evolved in many ways.
Its design changes and updated manufacturing controls have provided advancement in this unique rimfire. Some of the improvements include a new barrel bushing which has increased the feeding reliability. In addition, the magazines have been upgraded which also improves feeding. The magazines are now manufactured from steel and have an eight-round capacity with a feed ramp that guides each round into the chamber.
Acquired by Henry Repeating Arms in 1997, the U.S. Survival AR-7 has a long list of benefits that make it one of the first choices in survival rifles. The president of the company states that the new version is the most reliable of the AR-7s. As far as strict versatility, besides carrying the most popular cartridge in the world, it has many other outstanding qualities.
.22 Cal
While there is no single best weapon for every situation, the .22 rifle is the perfect survival weapon for the majority of circumstances. First of all, you probably cant find a more accessible gun in the U.S. or Canada. Most shooters learn on a .22 and are familiar with how it works. Since it is so common, it doesnt have as many restrictions as other caliber weapons. Any place that sells ammunition, you are going to be able to find .22 rimfire ammo. AR-7 was an interesting concept, though the reliability issues would make me more inclined to select a 10/22 take down or keltec sub-2000 instead.
10/22, any day, all day.
I had the sub-2000 for a few months (.40SW).
It didn’t take me long to just get bored with it sell it.
The ergonomics of the magazine release weren’t that great, either.
Great little rifles! I have owned an original Armalite AR-7 since June 1969 when I bought it from the MCAS el Toro PX the day I was discharged from the Corps.
Have fired well over 10,000 rounds through that puppy and has been accurate, dependable, and rugged. I would carry it assembled using a boot lace as a sling and filled the butt wells with fishing gear, a compass and 50 rounds of ammo. Perfect!
I have this rifle. I love it. I can fire 700 rounds a minute with it using multiple clips. Best assault rifle on the planet.
Bump for later
It must be “filled with clips”!
Plus... a BIG plus... is that you can’t drop it to the bottom of a lake - IT FLOATS!
;-)
The first weapon I ever owned. Went hunting for squirrel in East Texas with my uncle and put a round right through the eye of a squirrel. Could only see the silhouette. Best shot I ever made squirrel hunting.
You can’t hunt with a fully automatic 22 caliber Glock like that, can you?
I have one in my backpack.
Also have a ruger Takedown 10/22, which is an all around better rifle, but that is is bulkier, heavier and it doesn’t float.
In “From Russia With Love” James Bond wounds the grenadier in that SPECTRE helicopter, who drops an unpinned grenade inside the cockpit. The chopper explodes several times before it hits the ground.
All with one shot from 007’s AR-7.
Swap out the mag release with a better one and its fine.
Cute
Thanks!
Their last words: “Where is it? Where is it!!?”
Earlier, Bond & his Turkish friend used the AR-7 to pick off a SMERSH operative. With a first generation passive night sight.
There were AR-7 variants even back then. The T-62 Civilian Defense Rifle is a real hoot, when it’s being used to repel hordes of invading Soviet paratroops.
I think it was just too high on the grip, because the trigger guard goes so much lower than the standard Glock. It was an OK shooter, but nothing great and while it worked, it just didn’t excite me. And I went back to 9mm.
Don’t tell Hildabeast.
Two of these, and an AR-1 will add up to an AR-15.
