In practice the h1b visa program is much like indentured servitude and somewhat like slavery with a lot of abuses in many cases.

Aw well. I’m one of the top IT guys on the planet, so I guess some American companies should start considering me. Every business I touch turns to gold. Because I’m an evil white man.

Please find the evidence that this abuse of H1B visa holders is widespread and get back to me. Have you any idea how much havoc a group of disgruntled IT professionals in a company could wrought? Before I retired we hired a number of Indian programmers - because we literally could not find Americans who wanted to work for a small non-IT consulting firm - we designed and implemented surveys and psychometric instruments. One was truly outstanding, two were marginal.
Subsequently we outsourced to Nepal and then had to hire a Nepalese (H1B visa and all) to effectively manage the contract programmers.

Before you get too tore up about the H1B Indians being treated badly just remember that a lot of them, if not most, are muslims. This country has been remiss in failing to provide the training opportunities for IT jobs and shipping in a bunch of foreigners to fill the vacuum. And, by the way, no one is forcing these H1B workers to come here. I have nothing against Indians but I don’t like them taking jobs that an American should be doing. I particularly don’t approve of bringing muslims over here.

Fire them all!!! I don’t care the pretext but fire them all. Send every Indian in American back to India. Good riddance to them all and return those jobs to Americans.

...and I don’t care about abuse of H1B workers. I do care about abuse of US citizens fired so that cheap H1B could take their jobs.

Not all that long ago I finally graduated with a four degree. After receiving my degree I lacked the needed skills the for-profit college provided with absolutely no guidance. I started looking around to enhance my skills in Java, Spring and a few other languages. I started looking at bootcamp schools. They would put sites up and some would guarantee a job after you took their courses. What I found most interesting is that these developer bootcamps were mainly run by Indians. They would want you to come to their school and then be placed anywhere in the country on my dime. The program ran anywhere from 8 to twelve weeks and then you were tied to them for up to 36 months. If you quit anytime after you completed and before your 36 months, then you had to pay them 10K to 20K back. I did talk to to two bootcamps run by Americans. The first was based in Atlanta. You only made 1200 per month for the next 24 months and were placed into a job anywhere in the USA. 1200 is not enough to live on and eat in some of the medium sized cities. It could be considered poverty in some cities. No your room and board were not provided. Second, a local bootcamp popped up close to here. Each class was around 2500 and they had an apprenticeship program that they chose maybe 1 person out of the class to be in. To do this you had to pay 2500 and not sleep for an entire week. Some of the students went to bed well past 3AM and were back in class at 7AM just to get a spot. Most walked away 2500 USD lighter. The thing is that most of these bootcamps are set up for foreigners. THis can be seen by the students they post on their websites. I remarked to one bootcamp that claimed it was the ivy league of bootcamps, where were the picture of the white guys? They said they don’t take them because they make more money off of the foreign students. The interviewer was shocked I asked such a question until I asked him to pull up the website. He was silent after that. Lo and behold I was not offered a place at their bootcamp. The devcamps are where the for-profits are making money right now. Come up with a curriculum then promise students the world and then ignore them after the class is done. By the time the student has paid upfront and the check has cleared the bank, the school can say well its the student’s fault for any number of reasons as to why they have not got a job.

The H1B visa program needs to go away. Period. End of story.

Among all the horror stories, the worst is the case of a mid-size company trying to compete with the big boys and attempting to do what the big boys do by hiring H1B visas from India. Multiple phone interviews with the candidate, sounds solid, etc.

The person who physically showed up in the US wasn’t the same person they spoke to on the phone. Sure, the passport and immigration papers said it was the same person, but the person who showed up barely spoke English and didn’t have any of the experience. It was a switch scam.

Since the program is indentured servitude and this happens all the time, it needs to be eliminated completely and regular legal immigration strengthened.

The idea that there are not enough qualified, competent American citizens who can do IT; not just programming and software development, but also infrastructure, datacenter management and database technologies is not true.

There are, but there just not willing to work for low wages. It takes a massive amount of time and money to retain competencies, and such efforts are supposed to show a reward of a well paying job, and if not, why bother?

The discrimination against white males is profound, and especially white males in their 40s and 50s.

Case in point, the Disney IT HB1 Scam:

http://www.computerworld.com/article/2915904/it-outsourcing/fury-rises-at-disney-over-use-of-foreign-workers.html

https://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/04/us/last-task-after-layoff-at-disney-train-foreign-replacements.html

The happening at Disney was not some one-off thing, but rather indicative of the entire industry among the bigger firms.

Check here AND the comments. Lots of personal stories, too:
