Americans Stepped Into A Quagmire Of Deceit In The Patriot Act

As we search for answers as to why President Trump and his Transition Team were surveilled in November and December of 2016, and January 2017, we actually can go back to the Patriot Act. After 9-11 Americans were taken advantage of due to their fears of another 9-11 terrorist attack. The lawmakers had us right where they wanted us; thus, the Patriot Act was passed. Little did we know that we would have no privacy ever again. Remember FBI Director James Comey said the other day, “no one has any privacy.”

The surveillance of Trump Team is a serious violation of their Fourth Amendment rights. This surveillance is one reason many Congressmen opposed the Patriot Act–they feared the kind of political abuse of the law that the Obama Administration was evidently guilty of.

The USA PATRIOT Act is an Act of Congress that was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001.[1] With its ten-letter abbreviation (USA PATRIOT) expanded, the full title is “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001”.[2]

On May 26, 2011, President Barack Obama signed the PATRIOT Sunsets Extension Act of 2011, a four-year extension of three key provisions in the USA PATRIOT Act:[3] roving wiretaps, searches of business records, and conducting surveillance of “lone wolves”—individuals suspected of terrorist-related activities not linked to terrorist groups.[4]

What better way to address governmental inefficiency, bloat, lack of inter-agency communication, and agency balkanization than to create another agency?

Yeah, we did. And we, Conservatives, have to acknowledge that we played a large role in its passage greatly in part due to our knee-jerk reaction to come to President Bush's defense.

I recall there being a few people who questioned how it was that such a huge piece of legislation and its accompanying huge bureaucracy (The DHS) came together so fast.

Those people were virtually run out of town on a rail.

Then we found out a few years later, I think Rush Limbaugh was one of the first to point it out, that The Patriot Act had been written years before by a guy named Joe Biden and had been sitting in some desk drawer somewhere just waiting for the opportunity to enacted.

Hmmmmmmmm.

I said it at the time that this was a bad idea, unconstitutional, and would be used by tyrannical leaders for various bad acts. My Republican friends looked at me like I was crazy.

We should learn from our own history. We desperately need another Church Commission.

The Patriot Act. The most cynically named piece of legislation in America’s history.

Repeal the Patriot Act. We never needed it in the past and all it has done is squash our Constitutional Rights.

Shame some enterprising GOP Senator didn't do the same for an Obamacare repeal law.

You think that turd Ryan was pushing was all put together since the election?

They couldn’t even pull up their latest attempt again and run it through; knowing they would have to live up to their promises and actually DO what they said they’d do.

Govt can never be allowed to REDUCE itself, you see. Thinking there was any ‘opposition’ was the fallacy.

Other than breaking down the Gorelick wall, what did the Patriot Act do that was worthwhile?

We need to repeal it prontissimo.
