We’re Not in a Civil War, but We Are Drifting Toward Divorce
The National Review ^ | June 8, 2017 | David French

At an increasing rate, Americans separate themselves into culturally and ideologically homogeneous enclaves.

Last week there were two telling incidents — one small, the other more consequential — that spoke volumes about the state of our national life. Let’s start small. Over in Seattle, in the midst of a debate over juvenile justice, a city-council member invoked his “Republican friends” as a symbol of the broad-based agreement that incarceration policies need to change. One of his colleagues, Kshama Sawant, snapped back with the proud declaration that she didn’t have any Republican friends. The crowd cheered.

Sure, it’s but one small incident, but consider something bigger. The state of California is in the process of taking a series of political steps that are not only cementing its status as a progressive enclave, it’s stumbling toward its own foreign policy. After Donald Trump withdrew America from the Paris climate agreement, California governor Jerry Brown rushed to fill the void. California is touting its collaborations with China to combat global warming. Here’s Brown, in reporting by the Sacramento Bee:

“It is a little bold to talk about the China–California partnership as though we were a separate nation, but we are a separate nation,” Brown said of the state, with nearly 40 million residents and the world’s sixth-largest economy. “We’re a state of mind. I include Silicon Valley, I include the environmental activism, the biotech industry, agriculture. This is a place of great investment in innovation.”

Indeed, California has such a different view of the relationship between citizen and state, it’s virtually seceding from the Constitution, overriding the First Amendment time and again for the sake of “social justice.” And now its legislature is even taking the first steps to implement a $400 billion single-payer health plan....

I agree. It might then be a magnet, drawing the insane loonies that remain in the other states, to it.

Win - Win.

>If CA secede they go with my blessing. I won’t lift a finger. Just pass me the popcorn.

Then you’re as foolish as the South was when they thought the North would leave them alone. You either conquer your enemies or they conquer you.

Pretty much the case. The question is when will decide we want to make war back on the left. We are like most Americans we take and take and take abuse, we try to be reasonable and accommodating to a point, then a point of no return is reached and boom the temper is unleashed, then it gets serious and blood ends up being shed. Question is at what point does the nut ball left cross this line?

Unfortunately I don’t think it will be quite as nice as when Czechoslovakia broke up.

I was thrilled with my daughter’s choice. She got a chance to get to know folks coming back and folks going. The traditions that were in place at the time gave her a perspective she would not have gotten anywhere else.

She grew to love “our boys” and the men they became. They hold a special place in here heart. She came to understand why I weep at the national anthem and have a testy eyed time watching war documentaries

Wait. You aren't one of those kooks that thinks the South seceded from the Union in order to turn around and invade and conquer the North? Too funny. That doesn't even make any sense.

Let me set you straight. At no time did the South want to conqueror or occupy the North. The North never had anything to worry about in that regard. The goal of the South was to gain INDEPENDENCE from the USA and not to conquer it.

Your not getting the point. Libs are not going to seceded and leave us alone. They’re going to invade our areas and kill us. National divorces don’t work.

California governor Jerry Brown rushed to fill the void. California is touting its collaborations with China to combat global warming.

One thing that is encouraging this "divorce" is that there is a certain class of politician that feels as if the laws don't apply to them. When Hillary Clinton is allowed to get away with what clearly amounts to criminal activity, then others like Moonbeam are emboldened to conduct their own foreign policy, because they fear no reprisals. This is also true for the so-called "sanctuary city" mayors. Some high profile arrests would go a long way toward re-establishing the rule of law.

Snowflakes invading territory occupied by mostly gun-owning, God-fearing, responsible people? You need to rethink that.

Also, National divorces DO work. How do you think this country was formed?

Schlichter has a pre-quel now, "Indian Country." Read it. In some ways, it's better than the first one.

Oh yes. Thank you for speaking truth!

It’s sad that here, we’d have to explain what should be obvious and endure posts that smear past history. Sometimes I ask myself if I would even want to be in the same “trench” with Tyranny defenders. And I say that as being a Yankee by birth and upbringing, LOL.

It can really suck up a lot of time and energy trying to defend the South from incorrect positions and vile smears, and correct their errors. I used to try, but being old and tired, I have to leave it to others to carry on with truthful responses. I imagine the old Confederate soldiers might have felt the same way.

Today the Left would love nothing better than to divide us. It’s very difficult, but with that in mind, I need to look past their arrogant ignorance, and instead, focus on letting Liberty be our unifying connection.

The USA keeps the land, gold, resources, oil etc.

The hippies leave for somewhere else and repudiate their citizenship and are on their own.

I am ok with #CALEXIT. The whole state, no strings, no war. AMF.

Nope. They pay their bills first, and then they can leave. Every expense added to the nation as a result of their congressional delegation needs to be totaled up and they need to fork over their share of the cost.

California got to where it is with a whole lot of help from the No Borders Republicans.

When grass roots California was passing Prop 187 all the way back in 1994 to stem the flood of illegals we had fools like Jack Kemp and then Texas Gov GW Bush siding with the illegals.

And of course there wasn’t the slightest chance that these dimwits would slow the flood of legal immigrants from the 3rd world who were voting left and transforming California from Reagan country into an Obama paradise.

Trump has given us faint hope that something could be done to rescue California. But it will take enforcement of our immigration law, meaning sending the million or so foreign nationals living here illegally back to their own countries.

Don’t count on the GOP putting Americans ahead of illegals. Paul Ryan is a thousand times more likely to give them amnesty.
