Local Atlantic Salmon farm is the first of its kind in the U.S.

HIXTON, Wis. (WKBT) - Nestled in the small town of Hixton, Wisconsin, sits a one-of-a-kind farm.

Superior Fresh is the first of its kind indoor Atlantic Salmon farm in the country and it's one of the largest aquaponics facilities in the world.

The facility combines aquaculture and hydroponics, where waste from fish will be used to supply nutrients for plants grown in water.

The 720-acre-farm uses recirculating technologies that collect water and reuse it to grow plants.

That water is collected from the aquaculture systems which carry 120,000 pounds of Atlantic salmon.

Nutrient-rich water from the fish is then used to grow plants.

In turn, those plants clean the water and the water is sent back to the fish.

It's the only aquaponics farm in the country which uses Atlantic Salmon, operating officers say that's because it's technical and costly.

"Atlantic salmon need premium water quality year-round so they're very very difficult species to raise, not a lot of people can raise them," said Chief Operating Officer Brandon Gottsacker.

The 40,000 square-foot salmon farm is connected to a greenhouse through underground piping, recirculating almost 100 percent of the water.

Superior Fresh owners say this combination of growing fish and plants together is sometimes more efficient than conventional farming.

"So it's basically from farm-to-table in a very very short period of time, one or two days versus bringing the product from Mexico or Chile or California , which is multiple days on the road," said Superior Fresh Owner Todd Wanek.

By having an indoor controlled environment, operating officers say they are able to grow a variety of plants, creating mixed salads, whole head lettuce and herbs year-round, adding up to more than two million pounds of leafy greens each year.

"Therefore we raise all of these products on just four gallons a minute of fresh water so that's similar to turning on your faucet at your house, and raising two million pounds of food."

I love the use of the fish water to grow plants. But farming salmon takes all the health right out of them. They don’t have the omega 3s the wild ones have.

If there were no farmed salmon you couldn’t afford buying the wild.

During the hurricane I went several days without feeding the fish in my pond, and when I went to clean it I found the carcass of a bird that was apparently eaten by them.

They ate the whole thing almost.

I think could also be used as a proof of concept for us to grow complex foodstuff when we reach further into space.

Perhaps B. Hussein Soetoro could be one of the first deeper space explorers along with Mike Obama and the Klintoons. To make it multinational, the Turd-owes and Erdoğans could join them! They would make great deep space explorers that we could be proud to sending them far into space! 🚀 ⭐

unless they’re feeding these salmon fish meal from wild-caught fish, algae, or plankton, then these farm-raised fish will contain zero omega-3 fish oil, and you might as well just eat chicken, pork, or beef.

We can boost the O-3s in chicken eggs, so I doubt it will be a problem.

I hope they feed the plants supplemental nutrition over and beyond just fish waste.

A relative grew catfish and recycled the water though a hydroponic garden. The tomatoes tasted horrible.

You’re not alone!
I love it both ways..sashimi or cooked but my hubby will only eat sashimi/sushi salmon. The taste is definitely different when cooked.

I LOVE sashimi and sushi salmon.

Hate it cooked. Would never order it or buy any to cook.

Yes we could send Soros too. Or maybe just maroon them on an island. No sense wasting a perfectly good spacecraft...

Had a customer whose bacon I saved send me a thank you gift from http://www.great-alaska-seafood.com/ . Their quality is outstanding. The King Crab legs were amazing. I think the shrimp were U-5 (5 or less for a pound) All the different fish varieties were superb. Their Lox was also the best I have ever had. I have no idea what the customer spent but it was a bundle.

With all the radiation contammination from Fukashima this will be about the only way to ensure your fish is safe. Fukashima is getting ready to dump another 700,000 gallons of radioactive water into the ocean, rather than store it.

Salmon are carnivores. They eat shrimp, herring, etc in the wild. I doubt they get the nutrients they need from pellets.

I make a point to only eat wild-caught fish.
