When I lived in NYS, I found that outsides thought the entire state was paved with concrete and skyscrapers and everybody was an insane liberal. They projected NYC onto the entire state. Projection like that is never a good idea. People outside NYC are in some of the most rural country and small towns in the US and usually have good conservative values.
I live in CA and the same is true here. Get out of LA, Bay Area, and Sacto and its the same mix of good people. Please try to refrain from such uninformed broad brush generalizations.

Please know that not all of we Californians think alike. In fact most of the territory of the state is dominated by Republicans, just like the recent national election. There are five concealed carry holders in my family alone including my two daughters. The answer is to eliminate gun free zones and to realize that gatherings of Americans are potential targets for terrorists.
