Yes they were. Problem is he wasn’t a member of the armed forces. He didn’t go through any of the services recruit training, or OCS. He simply doesn’t rate a military funeral. His JROTC unit can and should give him a ceremony.
Dude, you may code but you don’t interview the end users, then design it, go through validation, and then code it yourself and then fix what you were misinformed about and get carried on their shoulders.

Their side has this PITA kid who is either a crisis actor or working on a Hollywood gig or being an on air actor for CNN.
We have this kid who did something heroic. Think man, think. How do you counter their narrative? Kid was ROTC and did something heroic. He was potentially (likely) going to do something heroic on the battle field.
Some people just need to get the anal sticketomy!

(Just ask his fellow countrymen whom he guided to safety while he took the bullet that had one of their names on it.)

I think there is a logical and workable solution to give him Honors and help the upcoming generation. His “Honors” service should be given by his JROTC peers taught and mentored by a nearby college ROTC or reserve unit. Teach them the tradition so they know and understand. The students witnessed his sacrifice and should present Honors. In these times it is getting difficult to get an Honor Guard for a decorated veteran. Most of the time it’s either VFW, American Legion, or a Boom Box Taps.
A cadet doesn’t get full military honors.
If he was IN the military, I would have no problem. The traditions and honors people get for dying in combat is not some “make a wish” charity.
This is about what the kid wanted. They already did that with the silly admissions stunt.
If the governor wants to send some national guard unit to act as pallbearers, that’s fine. But full honors? Nope.
It is the ROTC version of a soldier's metal. It has been around for quite a while.
And no, you do not get a military funeral just for dying in combat.
