Son called me today thing about proposing to his sweet heart

Posted on 02/27/2018 7:43:29 PM PST by cazmandeuce

Wow, my 25 year old boy called tonight to talk about asking his girlfriend to marry him. First, I had a feeling this conversation was coming based on what I could tell from what I saw from their relationship over the last year. They have been dating for over a year now, both in their PHD program, and I can tell they are soul mates. Oh my. Second, that's my first son. Is he ready.... My little buddy is thinking about such grown up stuff. Any parents going through the same stuff? Oh, they grow up so fast.......

“And both with massive debt to pay off once they get out of school? Sounds magical.”

How on earth would you know if they have debt?

There ARE people who don’t have to borrow for education.

I suppose there are two sides to it. I asked my wife, then spoke to the parents. “I would like your permission to...”

I guess it depends on what tradition you were taught.

You are right. People think circumstances when they were young also apply to today. The legal and culture situations today are not what they were 25 or 50 years ago.

If my sons want to get married, that is fine. If they don’t want to, that is also fine.

I don’t want them to get married just so I have grandchildren.

That said, all you can do is say best wishes.

Congratulations on 51!!!!! My 2 questions were do you love her more than anything else and would you lay down your life to protect her? Both answers were a resounding yes!

“He and I are still good friends, helped by the 10,000 miles between us.”

Thanks for that, got a chuckle.

indeed, FR can be a creepy place sometimes.

among the creepiest hits on the mysogynist hit parade these days is: “they ALL deserved it. They ALL sold their bodies in hopes of furthering their careers”. This would plop out on the forum EVERY SINGLE TIME another weinstein accuser hit the headlines.

Thank you, Teddy. A little surprised at the negativity of marriage on FreeRepublic.

In the words of the poet Kanye West:

“If you ain’t no punk holla, “We want prenup”
“We want prenup!”, yeaah
It’s something that you need to have...”

Just a joke.

There are not that many but they tend to make a lot of noise.

The worst day of my marriage is yet to come. It will be the day he draws his last breath. I will grieve but I will never regret that I chose to marry and make a family. Perhaps God will be kind and take us together.

Sure it is a risk, so is getting out of bed every morning. :)

Just make sure they know that being married is work. You have to work on it daily, choose to love and be kind even if you don't feel like it. Or maybe especially when you don't feel like it. And when they fight (and they will) to never go for the sensitive areas. You know exactly what to say to hurt your spouse. But this is the person you love more then any other in the world, why would you want to wound them? And usually over a trifle.

That is all the wisdom I have on marriage. :)

That’s funny Iowa. Neither of the two come from wealth but both are well grounded and will be going into in “love” and sometimes that is enough. At least that’s how I did it and it worked just fine.
