The US had plenty of vehicle failures too, especially in the early days. Two resulted in fatalities (Challenger,1983 and Columbia in 2003. Apollo 1 was a ground test but it should count too. Thats 17 crew lost. Apollo 13 was a really close call.
Lots of failures and flaws that should have deadlined the vehicles and missions until they were fixed were ignored due to time, political and monetary pressures.

Sounds right. Loral acquired a Honeywell division, and was frequently mentioned as the division involved in helping the Chicoms fix their problem, and giving them the knowledge to more accurately target the ICBMS pointed at the US.

So in reality, the ozone hole didn’t cause the failure,
excessive environmental concern caused the failures.
