Thomas Jefferson owned the late 18th Century equivalent of an assault rifle. It was a 20-shot .46-caliber repeater that fed from a tubular magazine. The shooter could fire all 20 rounds in under a minute. And it was the standard infantry rifle of the Austrian Army. Jefferson even made sure that Lewis and Clark carried two of these on the Corps of Discovery.
