Solar Activity Flatlines: Weakest solar cycle in 200 years
What's Up With That? ^ | 4/28/2018 | Anthony Watts

Posted on 04/28/2018 3:34:26 PM PDT by centurion316

In March our supplier of energy was more inactive than in the previous months. The sunspot number was only 2,5, which is only 8% of what is normal for this month into the average cycle (month 112).Only solar cycles 5 and 6 were weaker.

A sunspot was detected only on 6 of 31 days.

An observation made on April 10, 2018, allowed us to say that at approximately 30° southern heliospheric latitude the SDO solar research satellite saw a tiny spot (it was too small to be officially counted as a sunspot) that certainly belonged to the next approaching solar cycle no. 25. Sunspots are magnetic phenomena. The thermally conveyed plasma at the sun’s outer layer generates electric currents. Each of these currents produces a magnetic field. Depending on the direction of the current, the magnetic field is polarized and changes on the sun with each change of cycle.

The SDO instrument is able to determine the polarity of the magnetic field for each sunspot, and provided this image:

Is that the end of cycle 24, some 20 months before the expected month no. 132?

Certainly not. And solar cycle 25 has yet to begin as more spots with the same SC 24 signature are still in the pipeline. Moreover solar cycle 24 could resemble the end of solar cycle 5,

The solar minimum has started

It can still take quite some time before the next cycle makes its debut. Whether the current solar cycle turns out to be both an especially weak one and a short one is still unknown. Historically weak solar cycles have lasted longer than strong ones, It is difficult to say if solar cycle 24 will be an exception. We’ll keep you up-to-date!

I never thought I'd ever, ever see

1) a real tsunami (on video)
2) a electoral college/popular vote mismatch (now we've seen 2)
3) the Cubs win !
or the day the sun burnt out.

I'm getting nervous

we all know that the sun revolves the earth

Don't kid yourself. There are a lot of flat earthers around. I've meet some. The ones that believe that all the rockets we launch are getting stuck up there somehow. Loony bunch. Art Bell up all night types.

good one....although upon further reflection some predict the sun won't shrink and cool, but explode frying us all.

Decisions, decisions....for us all

But. the political wing of science elects to ignore the activity of the Sun as it is inconvenient for their human activity narrative.

True. But now some are covering their ass and saying that global cooling is occurring .. and to thank God for that as it will negate some of the Global Warming taking place (I kid you not)

If the Sun cycles down significantly we could not produce enough CO2 to save ourselves.
It has negligible effect.

weather prediction for tomorrow is ~1inch of snow...

Is that for the whole planet, or just your yard ?

Yes, I remember the Global Cooling mantra around the time of the first Earth Day.

When those liberal progressive are freezing their ass off in the summer, I am sure they will blame in on man made global warming.

Most of the petroleum based fuels in the Northeast come from Texas and Louisiana. I propose an “export tax” on those fuels to the Northeast. They sit on vast reserves of natural gas they refuse to exploit due to “environmental concerns.” The export tax should be to us in Texas and Louisiana to pay damages to our environment that really do not exist.

ps
In the past exploration for petroleum did cause environmental damages particularly in the coastal swamps. That day is over due to reasonable regulations. The environmental damages were due to canals dug through the swamp that allowed salt water intrusion. That no longer happens. Canals are still dug but barriers are erected to prevent salt water intrusion.

The greatest killer of the environment is the Corp of Engineers. They put the Mississippi in a straight jacket of levees. The sediments that in the past flowed into the swamps and marshes now goes to the mouth of the river and down the continental shelf to the deeps of the Gulf of Mexico. That is what is killing the marsh and swamps of Louisiana. As a result man now builds in what was marsh and swamp and we should have never built there.

Yep - almost May and have to occasionally use the heat overnight - we usually switch to pure A/C by the beginning of April on the MS Gulf Coast.

"If the Sun cycles down significantly we could not produce enough CO2 to save ourselves."

There are other and more effective gases. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is probably the best candidate to geoengineer a solution to global cooling.
