Did the executive have to travel to India to do it? That’s where most of the programmers are. IDK I work for Oracle, have for years... I’m in IT this seems a bit extreme from what I have seen.
The biggest crime I have seen in decades is people going straight to college from high school without ever having worked a job (all on mommy and daddy's dime or back breaking student loans)and then when they do enter the job market they whine, bitch and moan that it's so hard and they are so tired because they never knew what it was like to work.
Many still don't know what real work is, I've changed my opinion over the years after seeing a new generation or two and believe it would do both our children and nation good for them to have to work at government chosen jobs for two years, at least one of those years physical work unless medically unable. Maybe then we snuff out the snowflake syndrome.
Two unemployed employees, one was a failure the other a total success with mistake free work.
How does a boss tell the difference? He does not. Bosses are ignorant.
High success in a job is punished.
Failure is punished.
Better is to adopt a herd mentality somewhat. Bosses are extremely stupid. You are lucky to have one competent boss your entire life. Learn the art of politics.
You do what needs to be done, but when the project lead starts sending email at 3 AM it is time to call HR. Sure sign that somebody is wound too tight and ready to pop.
I once had a program manager ask me to take my pager with me when I went on vacation. I told him I would be located in a remote location about 10,000 feet above sea level. Bring a good helicopter.
When I am old and grey in the old engineers home, will any of my former managers come and visit me? Not likely, but my family will. It is the employee’s responsibility to decide what is important to them and act accordingly, not the government. Man up folks.
I post and read FR less and less as a result of my job, using whatever “free” time I can get with my family. I’ve been on call 24/7 for 14yrs, responding in person at all hours, in two different parts of the city I live in. I’ve been called while on vacation overseas, and answered email the whole time I was there.
People simply say “Don’t do that”. If I took their advise we’d have suffered millions in law suits, lost business and property damage before anyone else would have taken action. I just can’t look the other way while the company that employees me gets rolled, when I could’ve stopped it.
I mind it, but only because of the reason for it. Too many people don’t care bout their work, and don’t care to learn how to solve problems. I’m not saying I’m surrounded by incompetence, because some are really trying to do the right thing. Unfortunately, those people are not accountable for the outcome, and are not in positions of authority.
I just got off a 20 minute phone call about dual elevator malfunctions on a day we’re having an event. I’ll be tracking the progress all day, and will likely end up at one site or the other for some “crisis”. The phone never stops.
It depends. In my company, we have non-exempt (hourly) and exempt (salaried) employees.
The non-exempt employees have to "punch" a time clock (actually it's an app on our website) and are paid accordingly, including overtime if they exceed eight hours in a day or 40 hours in a week.
For those employees, we don't want them receiving email outside working hours because then we would have to pay them overtime. So we built software into our systems that prevent those employees from receiving email when they are not on the clock.
We were actually involved in a class action lawsuit several years ago regarding this, so that is why we went to the software solution.
Salaried employees, of course, are exempt from OT and they get the email 24/7. But seriously, we don't expect them to be actually answering and responding to email during their off time (though many of them do).
In my management position, I do consider myself obligated to check my email around the clock and I do respond to any urgent situations that may come up not matter what time of day. But I accepted that level of responsibility when I took the job so I don't bitch and complain about it.
That’s been exactly my experience. See my reply #27.
Now that is an excellent point. I have relatives in the Deep South who still farm and they have never had a vacation of any sort because it is just not possible to leave their farm for any period of time. The animals constantly need feeding and tending.
Yikes! Hopefully you work for yourself because your entire reply screams "Do not dare hire me or you will regret it."
IRT your 27. If your in management and work for a multi-national company or one with operations in multiple time zones, it safe to say there will be after hours email checks and calls.
In running a business, my ‘anxiety’ was 24/7, with the line between home and work vanishing. I never burdened employees with at=home expectations and was pissed when I had, in another job, to wear a beeper. Being on salary means never having to say, “Leave me alone.”
Sanskrit? That’s one esoteric auto-complete you got there.
Perhaps you like to be owned by your employer but my skills allow me to do work as i like. If an employer doesn’t like my attitude he is free to hire anyone he wants but in the future he will regret it since it will cost him money and work. I am employed by somebody and in the last 28 years have worked at only 2 firms. One is only as valuable as one thinks and if one is afraid of getting fired or laid off then that person has no self respect and doesn’t value himself as a free man. I’ll never be a slave like some fools are who get used like tool for 20 or 30 years and then tossed aside like a spent rubber. Grow a set!
You are apparently just posturing on the Internet, trying to be a tough guy. All this talk about not being a slave! Give me a break. It’s 2018. I bet you are pretty humble on the job and do as you are told.
I can see you don’t know me at all. If you are that much of a pussy toward your employer it is no wonder he would walk all over you. How about you go out and get a set honey!
Check out the “big man” on the Internet! Took you nearly 5 weeks to think up a response. You should have taken another 5 weeks!
I have a bit more important things to do than worry about what a troll like you would have to say honey. If you want your employer to own you and everything you do and have no balls that is up to you. I can help it i am not a pussy like you are who can’t stand up for himself. Try getting a set and being an independent man or for that matter a Man instead of some wimp who jumps at his employers foot stomp.
I will tell your mom to fix you something extra special for dinner tonight. You deserve it, you big man you!
