This summer Sirius XM devoted a channel to the Beach Boys. One Saturday morning, top down and cruising as fast as I can, I heard "Good Vibrations" followed by "Surf's Up." I should have been elated. They are the quintessential Beach Boys tunes.

But I was depressed because they sang of a California that is no more.

The Golden State is Pinchbeck*. The California Dream is so over that the descendants of Okies are headed back to Muskogee.

"Federal data released Wednesday show that California has the highest poverty rate in the nation," The Hill reported.

"The Census Bureau's Supplemental Poverty Measure for 2017 estimates that California's poverty rate is at 19 percent. That figure is a slight 1.4 percent drop from last year, but still the highest of any state."

California is a political and economic basketcase. People poop in the streets without shame or fear of the law. You can give someone AIDS without penalty.

But the state is banning straws.

And the state that gave us hot rods, funny cars, and low-riders is banning automobiles in 2040.

Democrats are wringing out everything that is good about California. I fully expect a ban on surfing soon.

The reason is clear. California succeeded. It built, supported, and expanded a gigantic middle class.

Democrats imported impoverished people by declaring the state a sanctuary for illegal aliens and by offering free stuff and good weather to the hobos.

Excuse me, the homeless.

To pay for this, the politicians taxed the middle class. Now they leave. In less than a half-century after Ronald Reagan's second-term as governor ended, California is the poorest state in the country.

"Good Vibrations" contained a wonderful line written by Mike Love, "I don't know where but she sends me there."

Wherever that place may be, it no longer is California.

What Kalifornistan needs to do is massively increase taxes and “social spending”. And of course they need a LOT more rules regulations and restrictions on businesses. That will change their poverty stats. Just keep on going the way they’re going now and they’ll be as rich as Venezuela. And when they need even more money just give them a federal bail out. I really like the idea of my hard earned dollars going to fund some half wit socialist’s pipe dream.

I’ll even donate a 6.5 creedmore or two

Not to stomp all over your otherwise valid point, the California depicted by The Beach Boys was a fantasy.

When I moved to Ca it was Grand.

I lived in what I suppose you call a suburb of SD, It was Country, folks riding horses in plaid shirts wearing cowboy hats on the way to the local watering hole.

When I left.. it was wall to wall condos.

During the 80’s in a conversation with my brother I mentioned how socialist policies ruin things. He countered that California is doing fine. I said it was on the road to ruin. Having grown up there it pains me to see my prediction come true.

Not really on topic, however I have read the ‘title’ of your post five times and, for some reason, can’t get the melody:

Havana Daydreamin’ out of my mind...

Pardon for the intrusion...

I visited Manhattan beach in 72. Exactly how it was shown in the opening scenes of “blow” the movie. That was California for me.

Grew up a long time ago in So. Calif. - Thousand Oaks. It was semi-rural. Had a girlfriend who lived in nearby Lake Sherwood - gravel roads, people living in small homes and cottages. My high school gang would hang out there - swim, fish, canoe. Now it’s a private gated community full of McMansions. I’ve heard that Britney Spears lives there. Makes me sick.

Ahh yes, "The Adventures of Spin and Marty". Growing old sucks. I can deal with the changes in my body, but the rest of the changes I can do without!

Picture looks to be from Honduras. Interesting that the police have to cover their faces, not the bad guys.

don’t worry they have a franchise or two in California. california doesn’t report them to ICE. Just lets them free from jail to rape and murder.
