Pentagon Mulls Buying 2 Ford-Class Supercarriers at Once (Kennedy and Enterprise)

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is continuing to evaluate a proposal put forward by the U.S. Navy to procure two nuclear-powered Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers under one contract as a cost- and time-saving measure.

“We are conducting an evaluation to ensure we have the warfighting capabilities to compete and win,” U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan was quoted as saying by Bloomberg News on October 19. “Any decision will factor in strengthening the industrial base and delivering best value for taxpayers.”

While U.S. Congress approved the block procurement in the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act, U.S. ship maker Huntington Ingalls Industries – Newport News Shipbuilding (HII-NNS), the Ford-class’ builder, has far failed to meet the U.S. Navy’s cost-cutting requirements. According to one U.S. Navy estimate, the service would save around $2.5 billion with a single buy....

I used to have Monsanto in Pensacola as a customer...they arranged for the wife and me to get the VIP tour of the Museum. I could do it every week and not get tired of it. Both of our fathers served in war in the Pacific. One a submariner and one in the SeaBees.

I heard a weird report the Russians are going to build a catamaran-style carrier; forecastle astride two strips, basically.

Pretty cool. Could launch twice as many planes at once and probably much faster.

The venturi effect between the hulls will be off the chart.

One hull for recovery and one for launch. Way cool. I wonder if the two hanger decks are connected?

Carriers should all be named after great American battles, no more presidents ....PERIOD. I don’t want a USS OBAMA anything.

Russia’s economy is significantly smaller than that of Texas, and the Russians are in a demographic death spiral. They like to try to scare the rest of the world with all of their supposed “super weapons”, but rarely do they amount to much. If not for their nuclear arsenal, they would be a non-factor in world affairs.

Russia is hoping they don’t get embarrassed by China outright annexing Siberia instead of just economically controlling it...

Yes - historic battles or noteworthy warships of the past, such as Ranger or Intrepid.

“President Ford was a Naval Aviator in WWII.”

...not according to the Ford Library:

Get rid of the Kennedy name and Jimmy Carter and only name ships after battles and those that were in them.

Kennedy was but he was derelict in his duty and should have been court martialed.

Jerry was also a mediocre president, who had previously experienced a typical (if undistinguished) wartime navy assignment. IMO, presidents with naval backgrounds should be honored in the same way that *Admiral* McCain was honored, or the five Sullivan brothers were honored. Put their names on destroyers, not the CVNs.

This practice of putting the names of national leaders on the largest capital ships has a really European feel to it. We should probably chart a different course.
