Interesting the differing experience and outlook based on that experience.
I was in Pleiku in 66-67. 550,000 men in uniform is the area. Casualties. I was a personnel clerk and talked to other personnel clerks. We were ordered that we could not report that our guys died in drunken pool room brawls and drunken traffic tragedies. But the reality was that most people in Nam when I was there who died, died from alcohol related incidents. Even many of the few who died in combat could not defend themselves properly due to intoxication.
And why was this? Because techocrats led by McNamara thought that if we throw enough men, and enough money, at the problem we are bound to solve it. We were not trained. We were in our sexual prime, reading Playboy... and missing out on the sexual revolution back home ... and the guys who stayed home were doing our girlfriend.
But few people admit the mistakes of McNamara and Westmoreland, who let McNamara and the whiz kids run the war from DC without even an internet or satellite phone to connect the back to the front.
Seeing the nature of big government in action is what sealed my tilt to small government.

This was a screw up by the ground commander probably influenced by the prevailing culture of separating special operations as leading the CT mission, with conventional as the supporting. Never mind that has never been US doctrine before. The special operators seemed to have wanted the mission for bragging rights, rather than giving the Air Force the quick kill.
Anyone who didn’t know the official story was a crock has a hole in their head. Dumped the body into the sea in an “Islamic sea burial”, my ass. OBL had been dead long since and the entire thing was a PR operation designed to make Obama look credible in foreign policy when all else about it was failing.
It has been obvious all along that Obama had those men killed to silence them.
The sudden killing of Bin Laden came right on the heals of him finally producing a birth certificate that was said to be fabricated by many experts in the industry. It took BO years to show his birth certificate when anyone else would have proudly produced it the first time asked. What took him so long?
