Shotgun vs AR15
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 1/25/2019 | W Clapp

At one time back in the day, inside most police cars were equipped with an M-870 shotgun. Then there's an odd ball patrolman with his AR with .223 caliber. Which patrolman has the advantage?

The logic behind the usage of an AR stems from situations where a firearm needed for greater range than a shotgun. Or how about shotgun folks talk about having knock down power to stop the fight with its 00 buck. AR's high velocity & capacity with 30 round mag makes up for lack of Knock Down Power. Which is better?

There needs to be a determination that each gun should be fired at the same target and at the same range. Because the idea is to ascertain some kind of combat effectiveness under stress, a time limit needs to be establish on each stage.

Test
This test was based from Wiley Clapp test out on Gunsite where he had two Range Masters both skilled with the shotgun and an AR go through this special course of fire. (Bill Murphy – shotgun and Vince Morgan – AR-15)

This course of fire were as follow:
A shooter armed with respective firearm would engage a silhouette at various ranges. First at 15 yards, then 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. At the command of a whistle the shooter would have 3 seconds to fire off as many rounds as possible onto the target. Read the rest of this shotgun vs AR15.

Not from 200 yards away. Which is the point and why shotguns are preferred in an urban environment.

What urban conflict is fought at 200 yards with a shotgun?

Modern tactical shotguns take box magazines. As far as recoil semi auto is usually lower.

I used to hunt deer in a shotgun only area. Took around 26 deer with my Sears (winchester) model 200 12 gauge pump. A few of them I needed 2nd or third shots. I don’t remember the recoil bothering my aim or shoulder or my ears till after the deer was down, and that was with 1 Oz slugs. However when Checking the accuracy on a bench the recoil was unpleasant.

Projectiles that miss the target carry down range. This is why shotguns are preferable to centerfire rifles in an urban environment.

AR-15 vs. shotgun? I don't know anyone who lives in a house with a 15 yard hallway...The one I live in is 5 yards max..

I have an old 12 gauge Beretta pump cut down to legal length loaded with standard #6 game loads that I would trust more than an AR-15 in close quarters...........But, to each their own......

00 buck won’t... pass through house walls and kill granny in the kitchen 200 yards away.

It also won't penetrate most body armor - something to maybe consider, given the availability of inexpensive surplus vests & panels. The LEOs responding to that North Hollywood bank robbery a few years back had shotguns, but ended up having to borrow rifles from a local sporting goods store...
