I've always thought that carbines make more sense when chambered for cartridges that have more potential in increase velocity in the long barrels. Like the .44 Mag, .357 Mag and maybe 10mm for semi autos.
The ultimate pistol-caliber carbine is still a .44 lever action, to me.

You and me both. The .44 M. is the realization of the trend started with the .44-40 and such.
Effective from a handgun, even better with more burning tube length and longer sighting radius.
