ST. PAUL, Minn. (CN) Under the threat of criminal prosecution, landlords say they are forced to be the carriers of the governments ideological message in violation of their protected free speech.
A group of landlords say they will be criminally prosecuted if they do not comply with city policies by providing information to their tenants on where and how to register to vote.
Minnesota Voters Alliance sued the cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis in federal court on Wednesday. They claimed city codes requiring them to provide voter registration information to their tenants violate their First Amendment right to free speech.

Their tenants are that stupid? Ow!
Fascism is great with a little ketchup
How hard is it to put up a (probably supplied by the city) poster by the mail boxes?
So on the lease agreement, include the following’;
If, and only if, you are a US citizen over the age of 18, you have the right to vote in US elections. If you meet these requirement, you may contact the city office of xxxxx to register.
If you are NOT a US citizen, you may not be eligible to vote. To obtain legal information about your specific eligibility to vote, please contact the Department of Homeland Security by visiting in person, the local ICE office at xxxx.
Could be super easy. Would still be wrong.
People who cannot figure out where or how to vote...should NOT be voting. And landlords shouldn’t be the ones to tell them...what is this? RUSSIA?
It’s not about free speech and the government does not have to right to order them to do that.
It’s all part of the illusion of “private property.” It is hated intensely by the left. They do not want anyone to own anything. They want it for the collectivity. They can’t have it all, yet, (but will if AOC ever gets elected pres), so they take away one part of private property at a time.
I wonder if you could mention what a pain in the ass it is to register and vote also.
Since when is a private business required to inform you how to engage in your civic duty?
This law is nuts.. your landlord aint your daddy or mommy
Certainly some of them are.
And the progressives in Minneapolis and St Paul want every one of their darling Somalis to get out and vote, whether they are citizens or not!!
Compelled speech is a dangerous game to play and if the landlord provides a clean, safe apartment that meets the building codes their responsibility ends very near to that. Some states require a landlord to provide a written, signed renters certificate if requested by the tenant and I've always wondered how that mandate can legitimately be defended.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the socialist paradise of the north.
Passport Please

I wonder how many are Muslims that can’t speak English. The landlords shouldn’t have to do this as the Democrats will be happy to go around and register them... and also vote for them.
It’s not the landlord’s job to make sure that all these illegals, moslems and morons know how to register to vote.
That’s the city, forcing a business owner to do something without pay.
1. This is not what the law says. It wants a notice when they sign the lease.
2. This is compelled speech. A clear violation of 1A.
This is just a crazy law. Just imagine how many laws like this could be created about anything. And not just applying to landlords, but to anyone.
I’m sure when you apply for section 8 housing they ask you to register.
If somebody is too dumb to figure out how to vote on their own, why do we want them voting? Oh yeah, because they will vote Democrat.
So what else would you like to compel your slaves (AKA property owners) to do? Take out your trash?
Voter fraud.
It’s not just a phrase, it’s your right.
If - and only if - you are a slimy, soon to be guillotined after CW-II DemocRAT.
