And when the TSHTF, 90% of Americans will probably starve to death.

It is an enigma. I can cook better than almost anything I can go out locally for. It is far less expensive to stay home and cook. So why do I go out and waste money? Laziness and time constraints, but mostly laziness is the true reason.

There’s already a cooking thread on FR. I’ll ping you the next time I see it as I cannot remember the name of the list holder.

I think it's Cotton Ball.

Well-I’ve done everything but die...unless my fishing boat doesn’t count then add that too.

Well, sometimes you’re tired after work. Cook?

Yes ... it's relaxing.

“Sorry, when cooking for 2 or 3, youlose much of the economy of scale, that’s a simple fact.”

Cooking at home requires discipline.

The discipline to shop for and prepare meals.

And the discipline to eat what you buy and prepare.

I stage my cooking.

I buy a bunch of chicken breasts and/or thighs and a tri-tip or sirloin roast every Saturday and put them on the grill with wood smoke and seasoned.
I also by a couple of heads of lettuce, a couple of red peppers, a red onion and a few tomatoes for salad during the week. Another bottle of EVOO and any seasonings that need to be replenished. Several bags of frozen vegetables. Some eggs, coffee, half & half as needed.

I spend 2-3 hours prepping meals and cooking on Sunday. Listen to the opera or the game and prepare for the week.

My grocery bill is about $100/week for just one person and I buy mostly organic.

I do that occasionally. The frozen Stouffers and other microwaveable dinners can be good and they’re only about $2. I can’t do that all the time though. I need some fresh things too. Besides, those are high in salt too so you shouldn’t eat that stuff nightly - but it is good and there’s a wide selection.

How hard is it to boil some pasta, mix in pesto sauce and pine nuts which you buy at the grocery store and maybe mix in some chicken you put in the oven and then cut up and mixed in? Sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top and there you go.

Or do the same minus the pine nuts but with alfredo sauce that you buy at the grocery store pre-made. Maybe use Tortellini instead of Spaghetti noodles.

Those are each 4-5 or more tasty meals for what? $12-15? You don’t have to do a lot of food prep either.

You can buy a pre-packaged Pot roast with all the vegetables and seasoning you just put in the oven on low temperature and cook for 4-5 hours on the weekend. That’s relatively cheap and delicious and its a good 4-5 meals or more.

I still haven’t made a decision, in a SHTF situation, about whether the dog gets all the food I have stored for her or not.

I see it all the time. People who complain of having no money but insist on being served food twenty times a week.

Plus, leftovers!

I have 4 teenaged kids. Leftovers are not an option. :)

I forgot to mention seasonings....1 tsp salt, 1 tsp pepper, half a tsp of garlic powder, mixed together in a small bowl. I brush the roast with olive oil, then rub the seasoning on all sides, then sear.
