Religion at heart of resistance in the age of Trump
United Press International ^ | September. 13. 2019 | Ali A Olomi, Religion News Service

"They hate religion," New York Times columnist Timothy Egan wrote recently in a column titled "Why People Hate Religion," "because, at a moment to stand up and be counted on the right side of history, religion is used as moral cover for despicable behavior."

This is true only if you see religion as synonymous with white evangelical Christianity, the group that, polls confirm, shows high support for President Donald Trump. While Egan tips his hat to Catholics who are doing charitable work, it's clear that by "religion" he means the religious right.

But there are many of us people of faith in America as well who are taking a stand on the right side of history. Religion, in fact, is at the heart of resistance in the age of Trump. In an era where historic structural injustices have become mainstream policy, many turn to religion as a moral compass and inspiration for activism.

This includes communities of color and minorities of faith working tirelessly as on-the-ground activists every day, despite being singled out for abuse by the administration.

A Muslim-led fundraising project has raised more than $150,000 for bail of parents detained in immigration jails. The Muslims for Migrants campaign is dedicating the money to pay bond for immigrants caught up in the xenophobic and oppressive policy that targets desperate families. They have so far contributed to the release of 10 parents.

The left hates God. They worship the State.

It’s like that Twilight Zone episode where Burgess Meredith is condemned to death because he owned s Bible. That is America’s future if the left takes power.

So is everything else. Like being a journalist or school teacher

This is what passes for journalism these days. No wonder that the profession has less respect than congress or the NEA.

Hell, they’re even dumber than Dorkbama the Muslim eunuch quota boy.

What makes the author think that evangelicals aren't engaged in charitable activity

It's called projections. I am a believing Catholic and have many differences with Evangelicals but I would never ever say they were not engaged in charitable behavior. That is a great bulk of what I see from Evangelicals.

Those who deny or hate God are the greatest fools among us.

Also known as 9/11 The Sequel. The Muzzies are coming up with all kinds of cleaver ways to destroy America and Americans. And we let them get away with it. I haven't heard of the Russkis having fundraisers for illegal aliens who are flooding across the American border to influence our elections.

How much charitable work do Catholics do?

Not much, just this -->The Catholic Church is the largest non-governmental provider of education and medical services in the world.

I'm partial to the episode where he (Burgess) was a nerdy man who was made fun of and got to make a wish. He wished that everyone else on earth would vanish so he could be alone in a library full of books. So everyone disappears and he's overjoyed, but then loses his glasses, so he's all alone with all those books but can't see to read them. In the Twilight Zone...

The Democrats rejected God and thereby pledged themselves to Satan in 2012. At their national convention. Publicly before all the world.

There have been studies done. Evangelicals give way more time and money to helping the poor, orphaned, etc. than any of the liberal “faith believers” do. It’s not even close.

The "Christian Left" insists they have a monopoly on caring for people whom Jesus called the "least of these", welcoming the stranger, and so forth. Conservatives, too, care for "the least" and welcome "the stranger." But there's nothing in the Gospel praising those who ally with lawbreakers, encourage invaders, or enable cynical opportunists, traffickers and frauds.

Many of us conservatives came, or our near forebears come, through immigration, exile and poverty. We were given help, and now we give help., where it really WILL help, usually privately and through our local churches.

But we are not commanded to be accomplices in the present callous and dangerous project of dangling irresistable incentives before the eyes of desperately poor people ---to get them to drag their kids across rattlesnake-infested deserts under the tender loving care of rapist coyotes.

The Lord did not command us to destroy the rule of law at the border, provide cover for the narcotraficantes, and abandon the poor to "Holy Mother the State."

Yes, religion — the religion of the self, the state and socialism. The modern progressive mind set is thoroughly secular. It is the default position and the miraculous and God are leftover fairy tales from a dark, superstitious age. The real religiosity is their belief that they can make heaven on earth. These heavens end up being Hell as in the gulags of the USSR. Just remember: the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Thomas Jefferson's letter to Roger Weightman was written 10 days before Jefferson's death. He wrote it to explain why he would be unable to travel to Washington to take part in the ceremonies celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Of course he did not know that he would die on the anniversary--or that John Adams, the only other surviving delegate to the Second Continental Congress who was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, would die on the same day.

Charles Carroll of Carrollton lived 6 more years but he did not join the Second Continental Congress until later in July 1776.

Frothingham? There’s a name we should hear lots more often!

It was for example Frothingham v Melon that the lawless Court used to reject the long held right of citizens to pursue a private prosecution of a public right.

After that bit of willful jurisprudential asshattery we the people don’t have Standing to challenge the federal when it behaves lawlessly.

Frankly, every single Justice on the bench (it was a unamanous decision) should have been lynched for the ruling. Their law clerks too just to prevent them from ever becoming jurists. Then every progressive lawyer of the day.

“their belief that they can make heaven on earth.”

and if you don’t believe in their vision of heaven, they have to reeducate you, kill you, or kick you out. Taken to infinity, there is only one person left.
