A book by George C. Edwards III, 2004.
Democracy is always an easy sell. If you admire democracy, if you feel that America is or should be a democracy, youll enjoy this book. If the 2000 election angered you not because Al Gore sought to extend recounts until Florida got it right, but instead because he won half a million more votes nationwide than George Bush and still lost, then this book is for you.
Purpose of the Electoral College. However, if you believe the Framers system served a distinct and noble purpose, that of providing an endless succession of George Washingtons, men of high public virtue, who arrive in office without political debts, and that any reform should address hundreds of years of political party corruption, then this work will disappoint. The purpose of the Electoral College isnt Edwards concern.
Political Equality. Edwards work relies on an assumption, what he calls political equality. In political equality, every vote carries equal weight. His assumption of political equality demands popular election of the President. Since the President represents all the people, it is the only moral and just approach. To Edwards, any process unequal to perfect political equality is illegitimate. Thus, the Electoral College is illegitimate and must go.
Political equality in democracy is a nearly irresistible attraction. But it is an emotion, a passion. Consent of the governed in the American system doesnt translate into power to the people. But that is where George C. Edwards III would take our nation. He isnt alone. Since 1913 when America wandered from the Framers purposeful structure and ratified the 17th Amendment, academia and with it the government and judiciary increasingly assigned attributes to popular will that would shock the men of 1787.

Our Founders got it right.

They sure did....
Yes, jimbug. Yes, they certainly did.
Read 55 Men and the Constitution by Rodell....and is based on the notes of Madison. The perfect book for the lay person.
My current tag line:
The Electoral College is the firewall protecting us from massive blue state vote fraud.
You only have a United States because of the Electoral College. The clue is in the name “United States”.
The Electoral College is a vital part of the agreement that united the States in the first place. If the EC is removed unconstitutionally (i.e. in a non-Constitutional manner) then the States are no longer united.
No Electoral College = no United States.
With respect to the article: the Electoral College IS about political equality. It’s a rational political equality mediated at the state level.
Not only does the Electoral College avoid rule by cities, it also isolates and minimises the effect of electoral corruption. You do not want your President elected by Broward County.
Al Gore’s pathetic “victory” was because of the October Surprise release of Bush’s decades old DWI arrest. Gore “won” by 0.51% of the vote and Bush lost more votes than that because of the story’s release by partisan press. it became “breaking news” but did not change a thing in terms of policies or personal history.
Even the Florida certified total didn’t include the SC approved military ballots. So the tallies don’t even reflect all votes.
Al Gorons can go p!ss up a rope.
Every election would require a vote by vote recount, all precincts, all counties, all states.
One of the few counties that Hillary won is the county that put AOC into office.
Gore lost both.

Yes, the EC “quarantines corruption” quite nicely.
But, there is a tremendous and building swell behind popular election. I’m not confident the Scotus will shoot down the National Popular Vote despite its outright theft of votes.
Let that sink in.
Why the Electoral College is Bad for America>>>>>>>

America will NEVER become a socialist country.
That’s a GREAT POST
Direct vote would empower third parties, and unless provision is made for run-off elections we’ll have plurality presidents.
Sadly, the firewall on the Senate was removed by the 17th Amendment
Excellent explanation. Thank you.
