The future envisaged by the 3% may yet condemn the 97% to death
A novel coronavirus dubbed 2019-nCoV belonging to the same family as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) has, over the last six weeks, taken China by storm, and spread to Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan and now the US.
There is no need yet to turn this drama into a crisis: the mutation is nowhere near as deadly as SARS: the outbreak began at the Huanan Seafood Market in the Chinese city of Wuhan, and it took scientists only a couple of weeks to identify it, once Chinese authorities had handed over the genome sequence to the international community. So it seems highly unlikely therell be a UK soap opera called Coronavirus Street any time soon.
At the other extreme, this is not something we can rest on laurels about: calling it a novel virus is something of a giveaway, because it shows that its yet another species-derived mutation. For whereas SARS is thought to have started in cats and MERS in camels, 2019-nCoV is another leap, and probably passed on from seafood given its starting point. So what started out a decade ago as an Avian virus has, we can now suspect, been repeated on land and sea.
But really, the new Coronavirus is an alarm call for the neoliberal orthodoxy in which most of us live these days. And it is fundamentally to do with the nature of epidemiology.

Regulation?
Why are they always trying to make these things sound so scary?
The real reason is simply that they have so many people squeezed into such a small area.
“Why are they always trying to make these things sound so scary?”
Sweet, juicy clicks.
The reason so many epidemics have come from the same valley in China for hundreds of years is because of the way they raise their livestock. They mix animal feces back into the food again which creates a breeding ground for viruses. When the virus jumps to humans you have an epidemic. That’s how the Black Death and many other plagues originated.
Sooner or later, one of these will end up being the next Spanish Flu, and kill 100 million people. So they make it sound scary because it will be when it happens. And clicks.
WHY do they do THAT? Mix animal feces into food?????
Why? I don’t know. I only read it in the book EUROPE by Norman Davies. Probably it’s to save money.
Dam! I thought it was just made from illegals urine...which is why they use a lime.

Yuk...yikes...
“So they make it sound scary”
Who is “they”?
The medical authorities are worried that it may in fact become another Spanish flu epidemic or another Black Death epidemic that overwhelms the medical facilities in the nations.
It may mutate itself out of existence, or it may mutate into something deadly. But your lack of worry comforts no one.

IIRC, they also live above the barn, where the rising heat from the animals keep them warm. Proximity factor.
Either that or its because theyre talking about something completely different.
I initially confused your suggested movie with Outbreak (Dustin Hoffman), which I saw twice. I guess I haven’t seen Contagion. That’s funny strange.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
