BRISTOL, Tenn./Virginia State Line -- Joe Deel is behind the chrome-trimmed turquoise counter of his legendary diner, the Burger Bar in Virginia, working with his wife, Kayla; daughter Emily; and sous chef, Corey Young. They can see people going to lunch at the State Line Bar and Grill in Tennessee, just across the street and less than 50 yards away. But their round, black-topped stools remain as empty as they were nearly two months ago when the coronavirus first shut down the country...A lot of cities and towns in our country border neighboring states, but few are quite like this city that sits in two states but has one name and one traditionally vibrant business district along State Street.

It must be difficult watching people go about normal life and watching that from literally feet away.
Make a food truck, cook your burgers in the restaurant, then drive them across the state line where you can sell em.
In Bristol, VA, literally across the street is TN.
The state line runs down the center.
I wonder when Tennessee will set up armed guards to stop invaders. Let Virginians deal with the government *THEY* voted for.
I’ve heard about that town. I’ve never been there, but heard the town is split down the middle by the state line.
What a strange situation, to see one side of town get back in business, while the other side is locked down. What a contrast it must be to see.
the effect of the response to this pandemic
West Berlin/East Berlin
...I wonder when Tennessee will set up armed guards to stop invaders.
They are welcome to immigrate to E. Tenn.
but they must convert to the local religion,
and repent of their sinful ways
Like looking east to west over Berlin wall. Real normal Virginians must have an incandescent hatred for NOVA democrats like we do for Chicago.
When I was 8 years old my family stopped for the night in Bristol but I don’t remember if it was Bristol, TN, or Bristol, VA, or anything else about the place, but I did see a GEICO commercial where the gecko is in the middle of the street making a big deal about a marker that is half in Tennessee and half in Virginia. Fortunately for him he didn’t get run over or that would have been the end of the talking lizard commercials.
Just look for the side with people in blackface and Klan hoods, and you’ll know.
This is good example of the difference between a republican and a democrat governor. Tennessees republican governor, Lee, assumes that his citizens and business have brains and can think for themselves, while Virginias governor, Coonman, is certain that his citizens need to be treated like children, and wouldnt know what to do unless they were told. I think another common thread which ties together all of the democrat governors is a sort of messiah syndrome wherein they believe that they are chosen and singularly qualified to save their flock. You can rationalize any type of brutal fachisim with that mind set.
I’ve been to the city where a line marks both US and Canada. Just a line. And there was only the US border guy in a cement office.
The contrast along State Street has always been in evidence.
The tax laws in the two states have caused various enterprises to decide to operate in either Tennessee or across the street in Virginia.
Interesting to see the stark differences.
A precise analogy ... although the police action to prevent people from crossing the line isn’t in effect ... yet. You know, to keep those isolated, crushed Virginians “safe” from the “socially irresponsible” Tennesseeans.
Like the Berlin Wall.
Yessir. People get the kind of government they deserve because they won't vote properly or won't go to a protest. Just like half of Mexico living here now.
