Protests and Pandemics

How to square the circle of insisting on social distancing to fight the spread of COVID-19 while supporting large-scale protests? Public-health experts are here to help, as is Shannon Paulus of Slate. “Public Health Experts Say the Pandemic Is Exactly Why Protests Must Continue,” reads the headline to the story, which notably lacks anyone who is willing to say that the protests will reduce the death toll from the disease or even to deny that it will increase them.

The central claim, rather, is that racism is (quoting one of the experts) “one of the more dangerous infectious diseases” and that fighting it is therefore a blow for public health even if it comes at the price of spreading COVID-19. “In the long term, breaking down structural racism is an unequivocal public health good,” Paulus writes.

The protests must go on even at the expense of COVID-19 "re-pandemicizing" (I love making up words) because it is more important that we take a symbolic stand against racism, even if it kills people. Got that everyone?

Except who is it going to kill (assuming you accept the premise of the pandemic in the first place)?

Who are most of the people out protesting?

Why isn't it racist to encourage protesting since people of a, shall we say, certain hue are more numerous amongst the protesters and also the same people disproportionately hit harder by the virus?

I'm so confused. Can someone help me out?

It sounds like anyone encouraging the riots - and that’s what they are, not protests - wants those hue-endowed folks to die in greater numbers from the virus. So therefore, it is racist.

Hopefully the A-holes all die from the virus. I see that as the silver lining around the dark cloud.

I wish these morons referring to violent riots as protests had the brains to figure out the difference between a riot and a protest. How frigging dumb can you get? Protesters don’t burn down buildings and kill people. Did the Tea Party protest do that?

No wonder the planet is screwed up. Common sense isn’t common anymore.

More people will die as a result of the reactions to COVID and Floyd. The left is ecstatic of the reactions and the consequences so watch for more “COVIDS” and “Floyds” and society will be duped again.

So protesting is necessary to root out a ‘disease’, but church isn’t?

Honestly, it looks like about 95% of the mobs are white liberal losers.
