None of the three family members who drowned Monday in a pool in the backyard of their East Brunswick home knew how to swim in what has been classified as a tragic accident, authorities said.
Investigators revealed earlier that electricity was not a factor in the deaths of an 8-year-old girl, her mother, Nisha Patel, 33, and her paternal grandfather, Bharat Patel, 62, according to a joint statement from the East Brunswick Police and the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office.
The above-ground pool was mostly shallow at 3½ feet deep, but there was a portion of the pool that was 7 feet deep and it doesnt appear that the victims knew how to swim, the office said.

We dont know how to swim.
Hey, lets get a pool! What could go wrong?
So how did it happen..the 8 yr old went into the pool, her mother tried to save her, couldnt swim, and the woman’s father jumped in, couldnt swim and they all drowned? Very sad, prayers for the family
These Indians are brought here because the are smarter than us.
Geez, small shallow pools are available.
Senseless loss.
I do not understand why people don’t learn to swim. I have met so many adults that can’t swim...my question is always why don’t you learn? These are the same adults that have plenty of time to watch Netflix, Baseball, football, etc...usually have time consuming hobbies etc. But there answer is almost always...I don’t really have time or I don’t know where you could learn...same person that can find out any detail on any movie star using google...but won’t take the two seconds to find an adult swim class.
Only one time did I get, I am afraid of water and freak out if I get near a body of water...I encouraged them to seek counseling to help them learn how to overcome it enough to learn a basic swim stroke that would save their life if ever needed. Again...unwilling to take the time to learn a basic self-life saving skill.
I think schools should require swimming as a part of a grade school PE program. You either learn in school or outside of school but to get past 3rd grade you must demonstrate ability to swim 50 feet.
I’m sorry, this stinks to high heaven.
If you can learn to float on your back, tread water and do a simple dog paddle or breast stroke, that is all you need to avoid drowning.
I haven’t been swimming in more than twenty years. I often wonder if I would remember. I never did it much.
They just work cheaper
My mother was an X-Ray technician. She said that a remarkable number of people do not know how to hold their breath or had panic attacks while holding their breath. FWIW
I find this story hard to believe. Not in a swimming pool.
Even infants know how to frigging dog paddle a few yards.
I went to pre school in Holland. They had mandatory swimming for all the kids, I didn’t like it at the time but I learned how to swim at a very early age and have always been comfortable around water.
Swimming lessons should be encouraged at an early age.
I only swim when my boat sinks.
Not funny. Weirdly enough, many people will jump into the water (from cultures where swimming is not a big thing) and somehow expect to be just fine. The YMCA runs all sorts of programs that do outreach to black and certain immigrant communities so that at least the children can learn to swim.
I worked in a summer program in the projects in NYC with mostly (well, entirely) black children and we took them to Bear Mountain once, famous for its pool, and we staff were all lined up on the side ready to jump in.
Outlaw dihydrogen monoxide!
I worked with a man named Bharat Patel when I was a programmer in northern NJ in the early 2000s. The age of the deceased is about the age of the man I knew. I hope it wasnt him; he was a very nice, very gentle man.
I have friends who do not know how to swim. Three of them, all men in their 30’s or older, freaked out at the idea of me walking around too close to the edge of a large outdoor swimming pool at a hotel. “What happens if you fall in?” they exclaimed. “None of us can save you. We can’t swim.”
I said, “I will get wet and be a bit unhappy.”
I should have pretended to accidentally fall in, but I didn’t want to ruin my clothes. It would have been fun to have seen the looks on their faces.
Then I would have breast stroked to the other end of the pool and backstroked back to the deep end.
My parents put is all in the YMCA when we were young. We did not have a choice. We would learn to swim... or we would be drown by daddy.. a navy guy.
Just made it to shark. hated every minute of it.
We grew up with a huge pool. Only times I went in voulantarily was if the neighborhood girls went in first.
I almost tested that theory a while ago when I caught myself dozing off in my kayak...
