NHL to salute social justice activists, front-line workers on opening day
Ditto. Until today I was not a hockey fan.
Somewhat unusal since I live near Orono, the home of the Black Bears and lived 80 miles south of Grand Forks, the home of the Fighting Sioux. Both great college hockey teams!
If you have never gone to a hockey game in person, try it. It is 10 times better live.
Great movie. Oh those Hansen boys!
“Evil racist White Ice Devils!...”
Well, at the risk of being, well, impolite, my first thought was: what group of young men is more likely to play basketball? To play hockey?
I’m sorry, but unfortunately, it’s true. First, basketball is nearly free, you just need a ball, and they are courts all over inner cities. So many more young black kids have the time and place to develop their talent and get really good.
Hockey is a much more expensive sport and parents have to invest a lot of time and money to properly equip their children and drive them all over the place for games, tournaments, etc. You’re more often likely two see two-parent families living in the suburbs who have children playing in hockey.
There is the odd exception; I can’t remember the name of the one black player in the NHL, but children coming from those circumstances are generally white.
The anthems for both Canada and the U.S. are sung at the beginning of games. And white athletes are probably less likely to care about the BLM movement. They may sympathize with it, but enough to cause controversy by “disrespecting” the flag(s) (the U.S. and Canadian flag)? I’m not sure.
Canadians might be insulted; they may not want to kneel for their anthem. It would be a complete mess and I bet the coaches and management are thinking about that and may have told the players not to go there.
White vs black.

I agree. And going to a minor league game is a fraction of the price but you still see some great hockey. My family and I went to a Gatineau Olympiques game.
Also, when my kids were in baseball, we went with the team to Ottawa’s minor league team, I think it was called the Lynx. It was a lot of fun, and as I said, a lot cheaper than going to a major league game.
The NBA needs to get pucked
Hockey is fun.
Lots of action, fast paced and hopefully they will bring back the organ for the games.
Bring back the Hanson Brothers!
Hockey gear is expensive!
Won a ticket to a hockey game 15 years ago or so. Glad I went, just because I never had, but the only thing that interested me was an early drone over the crowd dropping coupons and such, and I wished I’d brought a beach ball to bat around in the crowd.
I’ve found I don’t mind watching sports I’ve played, but even then it’s hard to stay focused for an entire game.
The key word in your post is parents. It seems that most hockey players have two of them.
Psssst. There are white NBA players too. ;)
And there are RUSSIAN NHL players.
Collusion!!!!
Icing is when the puck crosses a blue line AND the center line when shot into the defending end without being touched by an attacking player between those lines, IF shot in that direction by an attacking player in his own end.
It’s actually LESS complicated than it sounds. Really.
NBA out of the USA.
Don’t care! Until Kate Smith’s statue is re erected, no hockey....and the NHL and Flyers apologize for defamimg her...no hockey for me!
