Carcassonne can be played on Vassal.

My grandkids love Catan!

Back in the day...

Still have the game. Two sets, more fun.

We (the guys I played with that is) modified the movements slightly when we played. A much more strategic game, rather than a free ranging game, after that. Unit placement and unit movement (spear men then sergeants with their diagonal moves to prevent open flank attacks by cavalry...) became key and formation advancement (Roman legion style) was critical.

This can also be played on Vassal.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the input.

Yep, I had the first boxed edition of SFB and the pocket expansions for it. Then it really grew legs and became ridiculous with rules and fantasy player submissions given form. I gave up on it. F&E was fun, spent many days and tables for that one.

Another favorite was Flat Top (tactical air/sea combat in 1942 Pacific theater). A group of my friends decided the ultimate way to play was double-blind with a referee doing spotting and detections for the various units. That way, you could experience the horror of being spotted by a enemy seaplane that you didn’t see yourself, then facing a full-on surprise attack by a full carrier wing of torpedo and dive-bombers.

SFB Commanders Edition rules: over 1000 pages of rules in small typeface and no pictures. Federation Commander simplified (then slowly re-added rules). I have cardboard counter addiction.

I used to play Panzer Leader a lot, but never had time to learn the more complex wargames.

Speaking of Avalon Hill, I used to like their Sports Illustrated Baseball (1971 season, when the Orioles had 4 20-game winners as starters...)

Yeah, that’s the one I was talking about. Pure insanity, that edition. A bunch of seriously anal-retentives came up with it.

“Stalingrad” was Avalon Hill. Don’t have that but I do have “The Russian Campaign”.

That’s a classic indeed! Love all the “old” AH and VG games. Great stuff. My first wargame was Midway. Then Tobruk... Bismarck...Richtofens’ War...PanzerBlitz...PanzerLeader — then the Holy Grail: Squad Leader!

Squad Leader and the following three gamettes sucked me in. Bought ASL in ‘85 but never really got around to playing it. MBT and Flight Leader were faves in the late 80s-early 90s. I worked at a hobby shop after graduating college, so I was in hog heaven! The employee discount didn’t hurt either. But that was divided between games and plastic models.

Still do both today. VASSAL has been a wonderful addition to allow for live gaming when you can’t play face to face.

Lots of great games out now from GMT, et.al. But I really miss Avalon Hill.
