I believe the reasoning for the stacking rule was that you could put more troops on land than on boats.

Played Gettysburg (1961) with my dad ~60 years ago. Played Risk and Midway (1964) with various high school buddies. I played Blitzkreig (1965) against myself at one time.

Used to play squad leader 35 years ago, then got married and started a family. Wifey, “you spend how many hours playing that stupid game?”. One of my first “yes dear” moments.

I have seen this and other “Family” skits on UTube, and they are hilarious.

Gosh, you did say strategy but nobody yet has mentioned GO!!!!
It is ALL about strategy. I know, its a bit old but still makes one think about 3 or 4 moves ahead. I don’t play it anymore but did a lot in my 30s and 40s.

I still have quite a collection from my youth.

My brother is a big fan of Euro rail pick-up/drop-off games, so he liked Merchant of Venus. I also got him to play Blackbeard a few times many years ago. We played Magic Realm a lot as kids.

Right now I think the Chicoms are playing GO and we’re playing chutes and ladders.

I play various games by Vassal. Downtown with a guy in Wales, 2nd Fleet and Flying Colors with a high school buddy in Birmingham and various ASL online games. There is a large online community on VASSAL for most of the AH games.

Still most prevalent, though less frequent now: Wooden-piece Risk at single digits with brother and parents, late night with work buddies and/or roommates, then with children and grandchildren. Their next generation will be ready in a few years.

Otherwise, we mostly played cards, but tried almost anything else.

WSIM was great, loved that game. Also had Jutland, and you needed a pretty big table for that one.

Yes, I have many board games, mostly Euro strategy games. Through The Ages is my all time favorite, I’ve played it literally thousands of times in person and online.

Twilight Struggle is a game up many people’s alley on this board, I would think. About the cold war and made by GMT. It’s on google play. High difficulty.

I have loads of games, I’m not going to list them all. I was in a board game club in my town that was highly active until the COVID stopped it all.

It’s funny most of you are naming War simulations, because I love those, and those appeal to conservatives. It’s just the way it is, and Euro games appeal to lefties. I like Euro games, I’m not a left-winger, but you have to go with what people will play with you, and most board gamers around here are liberals. In fact, www.boardgamegeek.com is filled to the brim with left-wingers, it’s rather annoying.
