Wasn't one of the major causes of Japan's declaration of war was the restrictions to their ability to obtain natural resources needed for economic sovereignty?
That history repeating thingy is bell ringing in my ear?

Yes. Also, the USA cut them off from Oil and scrap metal shipments. Very poor long term strategy on so many levels.

The embargo of materials to Japan was initiated due to the Japanese invasion of China and atrocities committed by them during their occupation. Look up the Rape of Nanking. This had nothing to do with Japanese sovereignty but the war in China.

”Wasn't one of the major causes of Japan's declaration of war was the restrictions to their ability to obtain natural resources needed for economic sovereignty?” At the time, Japan’s “ability to obtain natural resources needed for economic sovereignty” seemed to include violating the actual sovereignty of China.
