After smothering the story for a few years, why is their curiosity piqued now?
Because they know it's going to amount to nothing. There is a reason the DOJ is leaking, and it has specifically to do with the calendar, and more specifically it has to do with the midterm elections. The answer is in the piece I wrote last year about the weasel who changed the outcome of the 2020 election and here it is:

Concerns about affecting the presidential election loomed large when Weiss entertained arguments about advancing the probe, according to the person involved in the discussions. No matter what he did, the decision was sure to come under scrutiny for signs of politicization.

He’s right in that there is ZERO percent chance this is being done by the DOJ to punish Hunter Biden for his crimes. Zip zero nada as some would say...
But what he misses is how this will end. The DOJ is said to be in “plea negotiations” right now, which I’ll bet is going to result in the ultimate deal. They will consolidate all or most of the serious crimes into a couple of charges and wrap them up in language such as “including any and all related crimes not specified herein”...and then there will be a settlement that amounts to a slap on the wrist. It could well involved some prison time (Club Fed type prison) and a fine, but the important thing is that by agreeing to plead to the DOJ’s nice little basket of charges, Hunter will be immune to future prosecution for any “related crimes” by a future DOJ that might not be nearly as friendly.
They have to get this done while they have the power to do it without any scrutiny. There’s no way this DOJ is remotely interested in actually prosecuting and punishing the son of President Biden who they’ve covered-up for for decades. But there is a very good reason to seek a plea agreement that will protect Hunter under the doctrine of double jeopardy.

I think you are correct. The first step to the end of the fake “Biden Presidency” will be the protection of Hunter. When Hunter is “plead” to a whitewash, we will know that Biden’s replacement is underway.
It may be that Harris will replace him, or she will go, before Joe.

I doubt any time served. The selected charge will be tax related, because everyone sort of hates the IRS to one degree or another.

Short answer, the DOJ must do this now since the possibility of a republicant Congress looms large.
