USS Jimmy Carter: The U.S. Navy’s Best Seawolf-Class Submarine?

USS Jimmy Carter, A History – There are currently nine aircraft carriers named for former presidents of the United States, while a tenth is now under construction. However, President Jimmy Carter isn’t included in the list of former commanders-in-chief to be so honored – rather Carter has the distinction of being recognized for his service as a United States Navy submariner with a Seawolf-class nuclear-powered, fast attack submarine (SSN) named for him. Carter was the only submarine-qualified sailor to go on to become the nation’s chief executive. He was the nuclear engineer officer on the Pre-Commissioning Unit Seawolf (SSN 575) in the 1950s.

Enter The New Seawolf-class: USS Jimmy Carter

The new Seawolf-class of the late 1980s vintage was something quite amazing. SSN-23 is the third and final boat of the class – and due to extensive modifications from the original design is even described as a subclass. The boat is the only submarine to be named for a living former president. Laid down in 1998, launched in 2004, and commissioned in 2005, USS Jimmy Carter is one of the most sophisticated attack submarines ever built. Larger and more advanced than her sister boats, SSN-23 has also reportedly been tasked with taking on a number of secretive missions for the U.S. Navy.

I served on an old destroyer and never got in a sub. However, I hear these Seawolf boats need a lot of repair. What do you guys hear?

Really the only one. The other two are expendable for parts to keep JC underway. It’s the spec ops boat.

The USS Jimmy Carter will have screen doors on the lower deck’s outer hull for quick escape in case of emergency.

Not to be outdone, Biden is already asking for his vessel’s to have explosive hatches

Off the subject, but this has been a truly detrimental trend of the 20th century - the deification of the American 'little emperors'. It started with coinage and currency, and that's where it should start ending.

It has an emergency submergence capability for when it’s attacked by rabbits.

I guess I’m just a grumpy old guy. But I don’t think ships, buildings, etc. should be named after living persons. And enough of this president-worshiping anyway. Name ships after states, cities, famous battles, war heroes, etc.

Aptly named as he was a President determined to take the country underwater instead of up into the sky.

I agree. Naming capital ships after politicians is an abomination.

The “USS John Stennis”? Really? (I know damn well who Stennis was, but naming a carrier after him?)

Reports indicate that the submarine will be retro fit by removing the conning tower and all control surfaces. Two enormous DC power cells will be placed, to accompany a huge vibration unit that will be powered by the cells. These changes commemorate what Carter did to America while in orifice.

Carriers shouldn’t be named after presidents. It’s supposed to be revolutionary war battles. We broke that in WWII because we built so many. Now they have taken over.
