"Name ships after states, cities, famous battles, war heroes, etc."

Agreed. Add to that list of possible names words that say we like to kick butt, such as Lt. Stephen Decatur choosing to rename the captured Mastico the USS Intrepid.

Oh good God. I didn’t know they named a sub for this loser.

The indignities showered on us who have been connected to these boats.

Biden’s will have guns that just fire straight up…to alert other ships.

I have many problems with naming them for presidents - especially, notice, most are RECENT presidents.

Yes, it puts too much emphasis on the importance of these people elected by the nation for a short time.

But it also makes one cringe at at least half of them, based on names we despise. FDR, God help me. Never mind the Kennedys.

Additionally, it is just lame. Why not something more descriptive and exciting?

Not to mention it may not mean much at all to many foreigners.

I served on an old destroyer and never got in a sub. However, I hear these Seawolf boats need a lot of repair. What do you guys hear?

Every ship in the Navy needs a lot of repair.

I'm mostly a carrier guy. You should see what they look like after a 9 month deployment.

I did do one deployment on Ike back in '07. On our last port call in the Fifth Fleet, we pulled in to Jebel Ali, Dubai. They kicked everyone except duty section off the ship and brought in an army of Bengali laborers who spray painted the entire ship from the top of the island down to the waterline in about 3 days.

This way we were at least pretty when we returned home (even if everything that needed to work was was by now broke).

At least Kennedy and George HW Bush were Sailors.

Carter himself was a Submariner.

And the crew of the USS Jimmy Carter can serve with pride knowing their ship is no longer named after the worst U.S. President.

To me, they could easily go down the list of CMHs. They accomplished something.

I’d make one exception. Next garbage scow I’d name the Barry Soetoro.

I’d like some of the old names to return to the list. Yorktown, Lexington, Bunker Hill, Hornet, Saratoga. Name ships for cities, states, war heroes and famous battles. Name them after some of the most famous naval aircraft - like Dauntless, Corsair. But Samuel Gompers? Really?

...indeed....!! I never knew they named American warships after British-born labor (or should it be “labour”) activists.... a bit of useless info here...

The USS SAMUEL GOMPERS (AD-37), a Samuel Gompers-class destroyer tender, was commissioned on 1 JUL 1967. USS SAMUEL GOMPERS served her country for 28 years, 3 months and 26 days, until decommissioned on 27 OCT 1995. After commissioning at the Bremerton, WA Naval Ship Yard, SAMUEL GOMPERS transited to her home port of San Diego, CA. She then began her regular cycle of Western Pacific deployments followed by time in home port. In the 1980s and 1990s SAMUEL GOMPERS deployments extended into the Indian Ocean as the US Naval presence grew in the Persian Gulf. USS SAMUEL GOMPERS was decommissioned in October 1995 and then sunk in a fleet exercise on 22 JUL 2003, off the coast of North Carolina.

Carter himself was a Submariner.

Carter was a Lt. on a diesel boat. Then Rickover accepted the scammer and he went thru Nuc training at A1W prototype in Idaho (just like I did).

This article contented Carter was engineer officer on SSN575 precommissioning crew. Carter NEVER went to sea on a Nuc Submarine until he went out on a 688 class with Rickover when he was Resident IIRC.

Carter was a complete scam as many think he was a high ranking submarine officer. Lt isn't.

I don’t think ships, buildings, etc. should be named after living persons.

I agree 100%, not with taxpayer money.

So, what vehicle is gonna premiere as O’Bama’s?

Just because a vessel is named after the now 3rd worst pres does not necessarily mean it is cursed. But, I’d never count on it doing anything of worth.

...if I recall correctly, this third-least liked President (after No. 1 Biden and No. 2 Odumbo..) used to bill himself as a “nuclear engineer” when most of us knew that to be very false...again, yet another democrat fraud who managed to become President of this now once-great country....
