How Ukraine uses high-tech anti-drone guns to down Russian drones and recover intelligence from them

Ukraine is using anti-drone guns to remotely disable and down Russian drones, allowing them to collect a wealth of information about opposing forces.
The Ukrainian company Kvertus Technology developed the KVS G-6, a long-range anti-drone gun that uses radio signals to jam Russian drones.
The weapon, manufactured in the Ukrainian city of Ivano-Frankivsk, has a range of up to three kilometers, or around 1.8 miles, and can operate for up to 30 minutes at a time, according to the company.
While both Russia and Ukraine have used older anti-aircraft guns to shoot down drones, anti-drone guns disrupt drones without physically damaging them.
With the downed drones remaining intact, Ukrainian forces can recover intelligence from them.
“We are not damaging the drone. With communication lost, it just loses coordination and doesn’t know where to go. The drone lands where it is jammed, or can be carried away by the wind because it’s uncontrollable,” Yaroslav Filimonov, the director of technology at Kvertus, said, according to The Register.
In a video for Radio Free Europe demonstrating the gun, Filimonov shows the tool disconnecting a reconnaissance drone from its satellites and control station, which stops it from responding to commands.
Once disconnected, the drone loses coordination and either lands where it is jammed or is blown away by the wind.
Ukrainian forces can then take the drone and read its data to gain valuable information about it, such as where it came from and any images it might have taken, he said.
The Ukrainian border guards successfully employed an anti-drone gun to neutralize an enemy UAV earlier this week, according to Ukrinform.
The company has made more than 80 of the guns since the invasion began, and over 100 were on order, according to the video from June of last year. It is not clear how many more have since been made.
The devices cost $12,000 each, but many of the orders for the anti-drone guns have come from volunteer organizations and donors, Filimonov told Radio Free Europe.
The weapons are relatively new. The KVS G-6 was offered at least in January of last year, weeks before Russia’s invasion began, according to The Register.
Another similar weapon reported to have been used by Ukraine in the conflict is the EDM4S, which the Lithuanian-based NT Service makes. It uses electromagnetic pulses to jam and down Russian drones.
More than 100 of them have been distributed among the Ukrainian military, according to Forces News.
A more rudimentary Russian version was also pictured last year, with a video showing Russian-backed separatists claiming to have used the homemade gun to jam and capture Ukrainian drones.
Drone warfare has played a key role in the conflict, with both sides using the devices for reconnaissance or to drop bombs, among other things.
Samuel Bendett, an analyst and expert in unmanned and robotic military systems at the Center for Naval Analyses, told Insider that weapons like anti-drone guns are in high demand.
“As to their effectiveness, it’s hard to judge that based on limited open-source evidence we get. Both sides want it and decry the lack of this technology in large numbers,” he said.

A Ukrainian soldier was told his legs could be amputated. An American hospital might help him walk again

Vladyslav Orlov, an officer in Ukraine’s national guard, didn’t see what hit him, but the next thing he knew, the car he was traveling in last October was rolling over and in flames. He suspected Russian gun fire.

Pinned in the back seat, Orlov says he was initially unable to get out of the vehicle – his feet had been crushed by the car and his legs had been wounded by the explosion. Once he finally did, he and his team laid in the nearby grass watching the flames and figuring out their next steps, in disbelief they had survived.

“Sometimes I really don’t understand what has happened with me, I’m still somewhere on another planet,” Orlov, 27, told CNN.

February 24 will mark a year since Russia launched its war on Ukraine – and ahead lies what is widely expected to be a brutal spring of fighting. Thousands of troops and more than 18,000 Ukrainian civilians, according to the United Nations, have lost their lives, and millions have fled. Cities and infrastructure across Ukraine have been decimated by the fighting and relentless shelling.

Orlov was eventually taken to a Ukrainian hospital. He was told he may need to have at least one leg amputated or that he may never walk again, in part due to inundated hospitals and strains on resources after months of war.
He was told that the focus was to save his life, not necessarily his limbs.

“(There are) a lot of wounded guys, you know?” Orlov told CNN. “Our doctors, everybody (is) working hard like from morning to evening, working absolutely hard but (there’s) no free space, ya know? (There’s not) enough medicine because it’s war,” he said in limited English.
So began the pursuit of another option – any option.

A 4,600 mile volunteer-led journey

Ashley Matkowsky, Orlov’s American girlfriend and a videographer who had been working in Ukraine, recorded what Orlov looked like after the attack.

That video caught the attention of some US volunteers and eventually made its way to Gary Wasserson, a retired American businessman from New York who was already coordinating volunteer aid resources to the region.
“I sprung into action and started making calls in the United States,” Wasserson told CNN.

Matkowsky, meanwhile, was working with the Ukrainian government to get permission for Orlov to leave, and helped to arrange transportation to Poland. From there, Wasserson was able to get them plane tickets to New York.

Wasserson said he sponsored Orlov to come to the United States under the “Uniting for Ukraine” program, which provides a temporary pathway for Ukrainians to come to the United States for two years if they have someone who can provide them with financial assistance. Wasserson’s toughest task was “getting the attention of Homeland Security to understand the urgency of the medical issues at hand,” he said.

“For me, I just keep pushing until I find the right buttons and fortunately everything came into place,” he said.
Taking it one step at a time

Wasserson asked the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York if they’d be able to save Orlov’s legs and, optimistic they could, he was admitted.

Dr. Duretti Fufa, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in limb reconstruction, is now helping care for Orlov. The hospital is paying for his surgical costs through their charity care program, a representative told CNN.

Fufa described Orlov’s injuries as extraordinarily complex.
“The complexity comes from the fact that he had both soft tissue wounds as well as bone defects or missing bone from the blast injuries and the multiple fractures in each of the feet,” Fufa told CNN.

Since he arrived in the United States in January, Orlov has already undergone “two very lengthy procedures to begin the major step for reconstruction of both his right and his left foot” with care that has involved multiple specialists, Fufa explained.

Orlov sees the progress so far as nothing short of amazing.
“It’s completely nice now! It’s like full foot, oh my God,” he told CNN of his still very stitched up and fragile left foot.

While Fufa is optimistic about the path forward for Orlov’s feet, she is quick to point out that while reconstruction is one thing, being able to walk again is not guaranteed just yet.

“I’ve warned him that this is such a long road that I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point we hit roadblocks where it feels like this is taking too long or that this is too challenging to continue to face,” Fufa said.
Nearly a year into the war, Orlov hopes to return
It’s been nearly a year since Russia’s war in Ukraine began and Orlov wants nothing more than to be back home, defending his country.

“I wanna try, of course,” he said.

He hopes he can walk again, but his hopes for his country are much bigger than that – he said he wants the world to know this isn’t simply about two countries in conflict.
This is “not just about war in Ukraine and Russia,” he said of the women and children’s lives that have been lost or upended by the fighting. “It’s about human rights.”

‘Like turkeys at a shooting range’: Mauling of Russian forces in Donetsk hotspot may signal problems to come

CNN — The scenes are chaotic: Russian tanks veering wildly before exploding or driving straight into minefields, men running in every direction, some on fire, the bodies of soldiers caught in tank tracks.

Russian military bloggers are calling it a fiasco, and worse.

These scenes have been recorded by Ukrainian military drones over the past two weeks around the town of Vuhledar in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, where successive Russian assaults have failed. [photos at LINK]

The Vuhledar debacle suggests chronic failures in the command and tactics of the Russians as they gear up for a spring offensive. If replicated elsewhere on the long military front in Donetsk and Luhansk, such failings could jeopardize the Kremlin’s plans to seize more territory.

About 20 videos geolocated by CNN show basic tactical blunders in an area that’s open and flat, where Ukrainian spotters on higher ground can direct artillery strikes and where minefields are worsening Russian casualties.

One video shows a tank running into a minefield and exploding, followed almost obliviously by an infantry fighting vehicle that suffers the same fate. Others show Ukrainian drones dropping small explosive charges on static tanks in open country – and a graveyard of abandoned armor.

At least two dozen Russian tanks and infantry vehicles have been disabled or destroyed in a matter of days, according to the videos, which were released by the Ukrainian military and analyzed by CNN and military experts. Satellite images show intensive patterns of impacts along tree lines where Russian tanks tried to advance.

The Russian Defense Ministry has insisted the assault on Vuhledar, where the 155th Marine Brigade is prominently involved, is going according to plan. In remarks recorded for a Sunday television show, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the “marine infantry is working as it should. Right now. Fighting heroically.”

But the leader of the self-declared, Russian-backed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, acknowledged Friday that the area was “hot” and said “the enemy continues to transfer reserves in large quantities, and this slowed down the liberation of this settlement.”

Vuhledar was built for the nearby coal mine (the name translates as “gift of coal”) and sits above surrounding plains. Its high-rise buildings give its defenders – principally the Ukrainian 72nd Mechanized – a significant advantage, as well as hardened underground cover.

Military historian Tom Cooper, who has studied the battle for Vuhledar, describes it as “a big, tall fortress in the middle of an empty, flat desert.”

The town has become a lynchpin in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Russian forces have been trying to take it for three months. Victory for Moscow here would make it harder for the Ukrainians to shut down a nearby railroad that links Donetsk with Russian-occupied Crimea and allow the Russians to begin a northern “hook” as part of their anticipated spring offensive.

A previously ill-conceived plan in November to take Vuhledar led to heavy casualties and a near mutiny among men of the 155th Marine Brigade.

Critics of Russia’s military high command say the handling of the latest offensive is worse still, with one military blogger describing it as a “shameful debacle.”

Cooper says the Russians built a formidable force around Vuhledar, “say, a total of about 20,000 troops, 90 MBTs [main battle tanks], perhaps two times as many IFVs [infantry fighting vehicles], and about 100 artillery pieces.”

But attacks launched in the last week of January were fatally flawed, he said. “They were advancing along a relatively narrow route, all the time in sight of Ukrainian observers posted atop of high buildings in Vuhledar, and now facing about 500 meters of empty terrain on the eastern side of the town,” Cooper wrote on his blog.

“Ukrainian artillery not only caused heavy losses to the advancing units but hit their rear too – cutting off both their supply links and their possible withdrawal routes.”

‘Only morons attack head-on’

A number of prominent Russian military bloggers have been unrestrained in their criticism of the Vuhledar offensive.
“They were shot like turkeys at a shooting range,” said former DPR Defense Minister Igor Strelkov, who has become a strident critic of the campaign.

Strelkov, also known as Igor Girkin, added on Telegram that “a lot of good T-72B3/T-80BVM tanks and the best paratroopers and marines were liquidated.”

In another post on Telegram, Strelkov wrote: “Only morons attack head-on in the same place, heavily fortified and extremely inconvenient for the attackers for many months in a row.”

Russia’s military bloggers have tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands of subscribers to their Telegram channels. They have been highly critical of previous episodes in the campaign.

One of them – Moscow Calling – said at the weekend that the movement of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles in “slender columns” near Vuhledar was asking for trouble. He alleged that Russian units in the area lack information because commanders have failed to integrate intelligence-gathering into battlefield decisions.

By contrast, he said: “All this has been implemented or is in the process of being implemented by the Ukrainian armed forces.”

Moscow Calling asserted that older T-72 tanks deployed in Vuhledar lack upgrades that would improve the driver’s breadth of vision. That may help explain several instances in which Russian tanks seemed to get entangled or reverse blindly.

“How are blind, deaf tanks, armored personnel carriers, with equally blind, deaf infantry supposed to fight without columns? And then how to coordinate any actions if there is no communication and situational awareness?” he wrote.

“If the Russian Armed Forces try to disperse, they will shoot each other, because they do not understand who is in front of them.”

Several Russian commentators have called for the dismissal of Lieutenant General Rustam Muradov, the commander of the Eastern Grouping of Forces. Muradov was in charge in November when men of the 155th protested that his tactics had caused disastrous losses.

Another blogger said that Russian forces were doomed to repeat their mistakes if such commanders remained in place.
In an expletive-laden post, the pro-Wagner Telegram channel Grey Zone said of Muradov: “This coward is lying down at the control point and sending column after column until the commander of one of the brigades involved in the Vuhledar assault is dead on the contact line.”

The commander killed was a special forces colonel, Sergey Polyakov, according to unofficial Russian sources.

Another Russian blog with more than 500,000 followers said of Muradov’s team: “These people killed a significant number of personnel and equipment [in November] and did not bear any responsibility. After which, with the same mediocrity, they began to storm Ugledar [Vuhledar]. Impunity always breeds permissiveness.”

Questions over troop training

But the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) says that poor leadership is only part of the problem: the “highly dysfunctional tactics are far more indicative of the fact that the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade is likely comprised of poorly trained mobilized personnel than of poor command.”

The UK defense ministry reported Sunday that an uptick in Russian casualties in places like Vuhledar “is likely due to a range of factors including lack of trained personnel, coordination, and resources across the front.”

Ukrainian military officials say there is a random mix of Russian forces in the Vuhledar area, including professional units, the recently mobilized, militia of the DPR and infantry of a private military company called Patriot, which is said to be close to the Russian defense ministry.

The setbacks around Vuhledar don’t bode well for a broader Russian offensive. ISW assesses that they “have likely further weakened the Russian ultranationalist community’s belief that Russian forces are able to launch a decisive offensive operation.”

However, some Ukrainian units have been running short of munitions as the tempo of Russian operations has increased.
“The key to success on the battlefield is effective fire damage, which requires an appropriate amount of weapons and ammunition,” said the commander of Ukrainian forces Valeriy Zaluzhnyi on Saturday.

Analysts say the challenge for the Ukrainians is to resupply frontline units with shells and anti-tank missiles fast enough.

Russian forces continue to have a distinct advantage in firepower. On Saturday they launched a barrage of thermobaric missiles at Vuhledar, a reminder that they are more capable of inflicting destruction than taking territory.

Okay so if you read past all the propaganda and made it this far, here’s the real update.

Basically, the Ukrainians are running out of ammunition. They’ve been at a disadvantage with Russia firing more per day for some time, but now the NATO countries are flat running out of ammo to give the Ukraine.

The tanks are not going to help, are fewer in number than promised because NATO found it had fewer in inventory when they tried to see if the tanks actually worked. So fewer tanks arriving later and later.

SOme aircraft donors are saying they will not deliver any aircraft until after Putin’s ‘Special military operation’.

Russia retains its capacity to manufacture ammo - it’s just hard to imagine that NATO just couldn’t hold it together to manufacture enough ammo, but it can’t.

I listened to some videos - talk about Russia’s ‘pincer’ movement etc. but it really comes down to the Ukraine losing the capacity to fire weapons and losing support from the West through a variety of means.

After all the lies, I don’t know how the MSM is going to spin it, but the Ukraine is losing more rapidly now, in this war of attrition. Before, the Ukraine’s losses were slower, hidden, denied etc. Reasonable leaders would have negotiated peace rather than burn through the rest of their soldiers. But the Ukrainians are reaching the point, soon, where won’t be able to fire weapons.

Unfortunately, boys young as 16 and men as old as 60 are being conscripted to serve in the Ukrainian army until the bitter end.

This explains why so many Russians are getting killed, why they are making little progress and why the head of the Wagner Group says he is running out of supplies and men.

Not surprisingly, the Ukraine has been downplaying it’s own losses and exaggerating Russian losses. A 3rd party player in the UN or EU tried to confirm/dispute Russian losses by checking funeral notices etc. and couldn’t come up with more than the Russians had already announced. So the facts on the ground do not support ‘why so many Russians’ are getting killed. Consider, the Ukrainians order a pizza and kidnap the pizza guy as a conscript into the army. Things are not what they seem.
But the head of the Ukrainian military said in an interview in The Economist a few months ago that he knows what he needs to win, and he knows he can’t get it because NATO doesn’t have it to give. It’s a known problem that is costing NATO the war of attrition they hoped would deplete Russia first.

But, but they say the Ukrainians are smashing the Russians.
