I’m pretty sure she/he/it would like to campaign to see us removed entirely from Free Republic.

No doubt that is true. She's already tried that with me.

“… When you see “the Ukraine” used where a native English speaker would use “Ukraine” then you can be sure the writer is at minimum a pro Russia/Putin fellow-traveler, or more likely a paid part of the Russian/Putin propaganda machine…”
*******************************************************************

“gleeaikin” is absolutely wrong on this. Until 2014 use of “the Ukraine” to speak of the country was in general use in the English (at least American English) language. I used to use that to refer to that country and it took me some tine to break that habit. Similarly, it took me a little time to automatically refer to the (at the time) new name for the capital of mainland China. I likely never will change how I refer to Turkey as that would take a letter not included in the 26 English letters.

So, no, anybody who slips and refers to the old name for Ukraine should not be considered a Russian commie.

The map will look very different when the Ukraine is divided up among bordering nations.

I just thought it was my pet-peeve. 😆

The Russians and their paid or unpaid contractors need to understand (perhaps they already do) that borders and pacts of yesteryear are merely historical points.

We can always play the “It was this way or that way” game all day.

Seems the same folk will (rightfully so) roll their eyes when BLM starts with slavery and reparations for the sins of the 1800s.

Why? Because today is today. There is no slavery and hasn’t been for some time.

The old Soviet Union had borders and territories too. I roll my eyes when people bring those up as a reference to this war.

Why? because today is today. There is no Soviet Union and hasn’t been for some time.

Great post BTW. I did not know that. Thanks.
