Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Small arms, ATGMs, MANPADS, loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles, trailers and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it is not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

Ukraine Situation Report: Challenger Tanks, Stryker Armored Vehicles Arrive In Country
With the arrival of the new Western tanks and other armor, Ukraine’s Defense Minister said “our military zoo is expanding.”
https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/ukraine-situation-report-challenger-tanks-stryker-armored-vehicles-arrive-in-country

Excerpts:
[Same image as Denys refers to below.]

Ukraine has received at least some of the 90 Stryker armored personnel carriers and 37 Cougar Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Vehicles promised by the U.S., as well as at least some of the 14 Challenger 2 tanks promised by the U.K. and the 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles promised by Germany, which has also sent Ukraine 18 Leopard 2 tanks.

It is unclear how many Strykers, Cougars and Challenger 2 tanks Ukraine has received. The Pentagon declined to provide details on the Strykers. We’ve reached out to the U.K. Defense Ministry for answers about the Challengers, which will now be the best tanks in Ukraine’s inventory, and will update this story with any provided.

But 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks have already arrived from Germany, according to German officials. So too have 3 Leopard 2A6 tanks from Portugal, according to its Defense Ministry, which announced the arrivals Monday in a Tweet.

Germany has also delivered the 40 Marders, according to a report Monday by Der Spiegel.

An extensive package of associated weapons and spare parts was delivered, as well, Der Spiegel reported. In the past two months, Ukrainian soldiers and technicians have been trained in Germany on the Leopard and the Marder.

The German and Portuguese Leopard 2s join 14 such tanks already delivered to Ukraine by Poland as of earlier this month. They were part of the first tranche of 150 Leopard 2 tanks promised to Ukraine by NATO member nations and allies like Sweden.

Combined, the German, Portuguese, and Polish donated Leopard 2 tanks provide enough armor to make up slightly more than one Ukrainian tank battalion, which consists of 31 tanks.

While it is unclear how many are already in Ukraine, all of the 14 Challenger 2 tanks promised by the U.K., meanwhile, should arrive before the anticipated Ukrainian offensive, according to The Guardian.

Ukrainian crews have returned home after completing training in the UK on those tanks, according to the newspaper.

==
As for the 31 promised U.S. Abrams tanks, even though an effort is being made to speed up delivery, they are not expected to arrive in Ukraine until the fall at the earliest, according to the Pentagon.

Canada has also promised 200 Roshel Senator Mine-Resistant, Ambush Protected armored vehicles, at least some of which have been in country since January.

“Defense Minister Anita Anand announced in January 2023 that Canada will donate an additional 200 Senator commercial pattern armored vehicles to Ukraine. Roshel will be responsible for delivering the vehicles to Ukraine, and deliveries are expected to be completed by summer 2023.”

“In April 2022, Canada announced an initial eight armored vehicles purchased from Roshel for Ukraine. These were delivered in May 2022,” the Canadian MoD told The War Zone Monday.

==
We are already winning,” he [the Canadian MoD, Reznikov] said Monday, using a derogatory term for Russian troops frequently uttered in Ukraine. “After all, the Orcs’ ‘special operation’ is going ‘according to plan’ - they are digging trenches and trying to fortify themselves. In their heads, they have already changed the paradigm from ‘we are the second army in the world and we will defeat you in three days’ to ‘we must go on the defensive.’”

“So, in short: our ‘military zoo’ is expanding. And an ‘elephant’ joined the ‘war cats.’ That’s what our paratroopers nicknamed the Challenger.”

==
Even if Putin’s statement about building that many tanks is nothing more than a pipe dream, 1,600 new ones wouldn’t make up for what he has already lost in Ukraine. According to the Oryxspioenkop OSINT group, Russia has lost at least 1,900 tanks, though the actual figure is likely much higher since they only count vehicles that can be visually confirmed as destroyed, damaged, abandoned or captured.

On Sunday, the official Russian TASS news agency claimed a Ukrainian Tu-141 converted Soviet-era jet surveillance drone was downed in Tula Oblast by electronic warfare jamming systems. The incident took place about 200 miles northeast of the border and just 130 miles south of Moscow.

That incident, in the Russian town of Kireyevsk, is likely the beginning of the implementation of plans to take the war deep into enemy territory, the head of the Center for Military and Legal Research, Oleksandr Musienko, told the Ukrainian Radio NV on Monday.

[Untenable: Russians Are Leveling The City With The Ground]

••Day 397: March 27

Today there are a lot of updates from the Donetsk region.

Here, in an attempt to exploit the fact that Ukrainians are preparing for a counteroffensive near Bakhmut, Russian forces continue trying to close the pocket around Avdiivka.

Due to the meager gains, Russians switched to the tactic of heavy bombing and started leveling the city with the ground and burning it with incendiary munitions, which is why Ukrainians marked Avdiivka as a red zone and started the evacuation.

Last time I told you that Ukrainians pushed Russians out of the train station in front of Stepove, which allowed them to secure control over the region and counter Russian assault more effectively. I also told you that in the meantime, Russian forces increased the intensity of their attacks in the northern part of the region, especially in the area of Novobakhmutivka.

The freshest reports suggest that Russian forces indeed established control over 2 out of 3 remaining Ukrainian strongpoints in Novobakhmutivka and got access to the highway because Ukrainian General Staff reported that there was an assault towards Keramik. However, after Ukrainians stabilized the situation around Stepove, Russian advances along the whole northern contact line stalled.

When it comes to the southern part of the region, the intensity of fights has only increased. Russian side released combat footage showing how they are using Anti-Tank Guided Missiles to target Ukrainian positions in front of the intersection.

Despite the continuous fire, this still remains the lowest priority for Russians because it is heavily entrenched. The increased pressure from this side, therefore, is likely meant for fixing Ukrainian forces and assisting Russians who are advancing from Opytne.

In an attempt to develop their recent success here further, Russians started extensively using ATGMs in this direction as well. As mentioned in the combat footage, their main objective is to suppress Ukrainian machine gun fire and support Russian assaults.

Nonetheless, Russians not only failed to develop their success further but also lost several recently gained positions. Ukrainian 110th Mechanized Brigade showed how they repelled Russian infantry assault supported with at least one tank.
[Image: one tank with 12 troops ahead of it - scattered in 2 groups of 4, and 2 troops on left flank and another 2 troops in the lead.]

Ukrainians exploited the fact that Russian infantry was using the tank as cover and started using drones and mortars to target the area of concentration.

Once the infantry was killed, the tank tried to retreat but was caught and destroyed on the run. In another assault, a Russian tank fired at Ukrainian positions, tried to quickly take cover but was destroyed by Javelin.

It looks like Ukrainians also conducted a counterattack and recaptured a huge trench network, as the video features how they are clearing the trenches and taking captives of those who were hiding in shelters. Ukrainian 36th Marine Brigade has also been conducting very effective preventative artillery strikes on Russian positions near Vodiane, destroying Russian assault units before they even launch their assaults.

Discouraged by the lack of progress, Russian forces switched to high-caliber artillery and mortar systems and air bombs. Russian 14th Artillery Brigade has reportedly targeted the area of the former military site in Avdiivka. Russian aviation conducted a series of airstrikes and destroyed numerous high-rise buildings.

The main goal is to level with the ground the southern part of Avdiivka because as long as the residential area exists, Russians have no chance to conduct a successful frontal assault. Today Russians also started using incendiary munitions, in particular, special magnesium shells for Grad artillery systems.

The main target of this strike became the chemical factory in the western part of the village, although a lot of houses burned down as well.

Russian sources reported that today Ukrainians started active evacuation from the town and are preparing to withdraw to avoid a complete encirclement. However, this is not entirely true. Just like in the case of Kupiansk, Ukrainians are evacuating the civilians because from today, water, gas, and electricity facilities will stop being maintained, and mobile internet will be shut off.

Despite the fact that Avdiivka has been in the area of the active combat zone for 9 years, there are still around 2 thousand people that refused to evacuate voluntarily, but as Russians started just leveling the town with the ground and burning everything with incendiary munitions, Avdiivka was marked as the red zone, and no one is allowed to enter the town.

Overall, Ukrainians have stabilized the situation to the north of Avdiivka and continue preventing Russians from securing any gains to the south of Avdiivka. Despite the low threat of encirclement, Ukrainians had to launch an evacuation of civilians because Russians started erasing the town.

It seems like Russians are committed to taking it because, firstly, they have already wasted a lot of resources on trying to soften up the Ukrainian defense, and secondly, they want to take advantage of the fact that most Ukrainian reserves are currently near Bakhmut.

They almost got everything. Something still not there yet.

Cannot tell from picture if the Challenger has the extra frontal armor. Else it could be penetrated by a Russian tank. Ukrainian tankers have completed training on Challenger 2 tanks and are already returning to Ukraine.

If the Abrams arrive in time, then the counterattack may be extended. Burt it will happen in 3 weeks, possibly 4 weeks. Question is whether the panes from Poland and Slovakia will be one time. Mostly waiting for soil to dry out and harden.

Denys estimates that as many as 100 Western tanks have arrived. 40 Marders have already arrived.

Standing up in woods, he tosses the now active grenade overhand out towards the field. Grenade hits overhanging branching explodes. He does not appear wounded, but video ends.

According to a photo published by the General Staff, Ukrainian artillerymen have begun using Yarmuk ammunition produced by the Pakistani company Pakistani Ordnance Factories (POF).

The 122mm MLRS projectiles have explosive warheads that inflict explosions and debris. Effective against infantry and lightly armored targets. The maximum flight range of such a projectile is 20 km, and the maximum time is 78 seconds. Its initial speed is 400 meters per second. Yarmuk rockets are similar to the Soviet 9M22U with a range of 20.5 km.

Fighters of the 67th separate mechanized brigade, suppressing enemy infantry with machine gun fire, evacuated a wounded Ukrainian defender near Bakhmut. The enemy dropped a grenade from a drone on the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and one of the fighters got wounded in his hand with a shrapnel.

The evacuation was carried out on a Hummer SUV with a Browning heavy machine gun on the roof. While the wounded soldier got into the car, the machine gunner fired at the landing, where the enemy infantry was located. A fighter from the evacuation transport also fired at the Russians from a machine gun.

MOSCOW, March 28. /TASS/. Russian air defense forces intercepted a GLSDB (Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb) smart munition for the first time during the special military operation in Ukraine, Defense Ministry Spokesman Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov reported on Tuesday.

“In the past 24 hours, air defense capabilities intercepted 18 rockets of the HIMARS multiple launch rocket system and one GLSDB guided munition,” the spokesman said.

In addition, Russian air defense systems destroyed 12 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles in areas near the settlements of Pologi in the Zaporozhye Region, Golikovo, Rubezhnoye and Svatovo in the Lugansk People’s Republic, Soledar, Volnovakha and Vladimirovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic and Velikiye Vyselki in the Kharkov Region, the general added.

Battles in Kupyansk direction

“In the Donetsk direction, as many as 240 Ukrainian personnel and mercenaries, three infantry combat vehicles, three armored personnel carriers, two armored combat vehicles, four motor vehicles and a D-30 howitzer were destroyed as a result of active operations by units and artillery of the southern battlegroup,” the spokesman said.

Battles in southern Donetsk, Zaporozhye directions

Russian forces destroyed about 20 Ukrainian troops in the southern Donetsk and Zaporozhye areas over the past day, Konashenkov reported.

Combat aircraft and artillery of the battlegroup East struck the Ukrainian army units near the settlements of Novomikhailovka and Ugledar in the Donetsk People’s Republic, the spokesman specified.

“The enemy’s losses in those areas in the past 24 hours amounted to 20 Ukrainian personnel, and also three motor vehicles,” the general said.

With more effort and experience, do you think you could get it down to 40 seconds? 30 seconds?

That would TRULY be remarkable!

Keep it up speedy, appreciate the thread and how it infuriates the trolls.
Post on tanks and tank production was very informative. Everything has the fog of war and tainted by propaganda machine, but conclusions seem reasonable
Perun, ATP geopolitics, and joe bloggs are good places for information and discussion.
Knowing the true state of the Russian economy is challenging, even the numbers they report(reporting far fewer now) are interesting. They point to a pretty dire state, revenue down, expenses up, civilian expenditures down, inflation up…. Odd that they report basically negative numbers. My knee jerk reaction is that it is much worse than they report, but who knows

Keep it up speedy and all

“Russia’s Economy Is Starting to Come Undone”

“Investment is down, labor is scarce, budget is squeezed. Oligarch: ‘There will be no money next year’”

“The opening months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year drove an increase in oil and natural-gas prices that brought a windfall for Moscow. Those days are over.

As the war continues into its second year and Western sanctions bite harder, Russia’s government revenue is being squeezed and its economy has shifted to a lower-growth trajectory, likely for the long term.

The country’s biggest exports, gas and oil, have lost major customers. Government finances are strained. The ruble is down over 20% since November against the dollar. The labor force has shrunk as young people are sent to the front or flee the country over fears of being drafted. Uncertainty has curbed business investment.

“Russia’s economy is entering a long-term regression,” predicted Alexandra Prokopenko, a former Russian Central Bank official who left the country shortly after the invasion.”
