I predict that, long term, singer Steve Young will be more famous than his namesake, the great '49ers quarterback, whom nfl.com ranks as the 15th greatest quarterback of all time.
At the moment the footballer is much more famous than the singer, whose birthday is coming up on the 12th of July.
Who wants to help me bridge the current gap in fame between these two men?
For those who know little about the singer, please listen to "My Oklahoma" written by Young's wife, Terrye Newkirk, aka Cheryl Young.
The lyrics are gloriously free American words about being as one with the place you live in:
"Stars out in the morning And the still rustle of corn What a good place to be born
Clouds over the prairie Till the wind blows them away At the still start of the day
Hey, my Oklahoma Are you still awaiting for me With your gold plain waving free"
A glorious voice.
For me, a great American.
Steve Young.
The singer.

I am not familiar with him, but I googled him and he looks interesting. Thanks for the tip.

I hope nobody on FR accuses me of racism for this response:
If there is any part of America which may lack an appreciation of great country music, it could be the Southside Of Chicago.
Is it lonely being a Republican there?
You’re probably right. I grew up in southern Illinois, and my parents listened to a lot of country music, so I was raised correctly. I checked out Steve Young on YouTube. Good stuff.
I have been asked before if there is such a thing as a Southside Chicago Republican. I say yes, but we are like the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker: believed to be extinct, but with occasional unconfirmed sightings. What I have discovered about my part of the far south side, which is largely blue-collar, of Eastern European stock, Catholic/Orthodox, and Mexicans who have been there for a hundred years, is that they will always vote Democrat (not that there is any choice in a one-party city) but they tend to be socially conservative. They are pro-police. I didn’t see anything objectionable being taught in school, at least a few years back when my son attended. That is in contrast to most of the rest of Chicago, which is totally nuts.
