Michael Kofman @KofmanMichael 2h

A few thoughts on the dam’s destruction and its implications for Ukraine’s offensive. In brief, I doubt it will have a significant impact on UA mil operations. The Khakovka dam is at least 100 miles from where much of the activity might take place at its closest point.

A Ukrainian cross-river operation in southern Kherson, below the dam, was always a risky and therefore low-probability prospect. There is no evidence that such an operation was under way, or would have necessarily been a part of the UA offensive plans.

Destroying the dam does not substantially shorten Russian lines, or make defense much easier, although it does make a UA cross-river operation exceedingly difficult in that area. But, the flood will likely also destroy the initial line of Russian entrenchments along the river.

If the Ukrainian plan is to break through RF lines in Zaporizhia and advance to the ground lines of communication from Crimea, or sever the ‘land bridge’ (and I won’t speculate as to what it might be), the resultant flooding is unlikely to impede such an operation.

This is an ecological and humanitarian catastrophe, with long term economic implications for the region, for which Russia is responsible, but I’m skeptical that Ukraine’s military prospects in the short term will be negatively affected in a meaningful way.

Disproved nothing, and it wasn’t an “argument” but a possible scenario

I was amazed learning in my readings how much down time there was during combat operations in WW2
Even during combat but units were routinely rotated out for R&R

Sounds like the Ukrainians have been doing a pretty good job of this, not so much for the russians

but then a magnetic mine got sucked into an intake

A mine, capable of blowing up a tank or a mine that could hole a ship, would only scratch a dam. Explosives need to be in the tons to do the damage they did.

In any case, everyone seems to overlook that the hydroelectric power plant with the turbines was also blown up - no mine there.

The Russians are the stupid ones the blew the dam and the station up, and like Chernobyl & their pipelines, they will try to do something even more stupid with the rector complex they hold.

History note:
Big as that reservoir was, even greater was the destruction of The Great Man Made River in Hillary’s war on Libya.

Historically, Libya feed the Roman Empire for centuries, and would have fed the world, except for the terrorist Clinton in her blind obsession for power.

WaPo reported yesterday (6 June 2023): “Biden administration officials believe the offensive began on Monday (5 June) with a Ukrainian thrust south along multiple axes. A major goal is to cut the land bridge across southeastern Ukraine that connects Russia with its occupation forces in Crimea, U.S. officials believe. Part of Ukraine’s strategy appears to be an attack along several lanes, so they can move forces among them to hit targets of greatest opportunity.

Administration officials were encouraged by better-than-expected progress Monday, as Ukrainian units pushed through heavily mined areas to advance between five and 10 kilometers in some areas of the long front. That raised hopes that Ukrainian forces can keep thrusting toward Mariupol, Melitopol and other Russian-held places along the coast — severing the land bridge.”

Ukraine does not possess the weaponry to destroy the dam, a fact the pro-Russian posters are ignoring. Possession is 9/10s of the law applies. Russia had possession, means and motive, even if the motive is not entirely rational from a western point of view. Motives influenced by the Russian army’s habit of making really stupid decisions.

There is a video of bridge across the dam getting blow up from November. AFAIK there no video has been released of what destroyed the dam. Russia definitely has the video from the security cameras, they aren’t releasing it.
