William Jennings Bryan ran for President of the United States as the Democrat nominee in 1896, 1900 and 1908. He lost three times lacking the money and power of the business forces backing the Republicans.
Bryan also know for defending Creationism at the Scopes Trial right before his death in 1925. Bryan also a pacifist who left his post as Secretary of State as events moved towards US involvement in World War I.
Mr. Bryan actually called for the government to own the railroads.

The TV set in the living room has one of those seedy shows on the crime shows with gruesome murders, brutal rapes and so on.

At the turn of the 20th century railroads as the primary means of transportation alongside boats with no highway network, no trucks, cars etc.
Railroads were big money makers they controlled destinies of communities could take over land to build new railroads easily and so on.
Railroads bought the politicians took the land it was satirized in stuff like “Blazing Saddles” and it some sort of theme in many Westerns.
