Tik Tok: The New Red Scare?
Seeking Alpha ^ | 03/14/2024

China has responded to the new U.S. House bill passed against TikTok, and it doesn't look like it's going to make the U.S.-Sino relationship any better. While the measure still has to wind its way through the Senate, it would essentially ban the platform for all Americans unless TikTok's operations were divested from Chinese parent firm ByteDance (BDNCE). The formal name of the bill, titled the "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act," also likely riled Beijing, which was quick to lay out its position and accuse Washington of "resorting to acts of bullying."

Quote: "Though the U.S. has never found any evidence of TikTok posing a threat to U.S. national security, it has never stopped going after TikTok," said Wang Wenbin, spokesman for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "Such practice of resorting to hegemonic moves when one could not succeed in fair competition disrupts the normal operation of businesses, undermines the confidence of international investors in the investment environment, and sabotages the normal economic and trade order in the world. This will inevitably come back to backfire on the United States itself."

Speaking of fair competition, Beijing does not allow any U.S. social media companies to operate in China, though there appears to be something bigger here at play. It revolves around the significant policy shift in how to deal with China and the evaluation of what capabilities should be ascribed to the CCP. What started as a crusade against intellectual property theft and unfair trade practices has morphed into accusations of mass surveillance and the ability to influence an entire generation of American youth. That doesn't mean the threat isn't real or isn't happening, especially given the danger of a new global order,

But one thing seems certain: there will be tradeoffs of American liberties in exchange for a dramatic expansion of state power.

“While the measure still has to wind its way through the Senate,”

That is if Chuck Tumor brigs it up for a vote.

Imagine a world where the CEOs, presidents and founders of all of the major companies...including the social media companies, the major news conglomerates, film, TV, big tech, finance, etc.....were all dual citizens of another country.

Can you imagine how dangerous that would be?

Imagine how that foreign country could control the narratives in our country....Possibly to the extent where someone even pointing it out would generate outrage from all political parties in America.

speaking of REDS

the Russian and Chinese Communist parties
never would have come to power in those 2 countries
with out
the Marxists in the United States help.

They were here then
and their commie spawn are still in our government.

They are on the cusp of handing our country and the world to the CCP.

This is the history our public schools made sure we never heard.

Push this out to everyone.

Where has this happened before?
That pesky constitution thingie and and that bad old first amendment....

Those who sacrifice freedom for safety receive neither one.

I have no desire to ever use Tik Tok but what I fear is in words of Nancy Pelosi “we have to pass the bill to find out what’s in it”, I am fairly certain the intent of the bill is just to give the government more power to regulate free speech and more surveillance of the American people

When Trump went after China on trade he was right on the mark. Going after them on Defense spending and military expansionism, he was right on the mark. He also may have had a point with the phones (that was an issue early on). Going after them over tik toc is silly. I like his new position better, let them be a counterweight to facebook etc. A better way to deal with Tic Toc is to make Truth Social more popular. This would be a good time to let the marketplace of ideas flourish. Trump missed the mark on this one and though he has changed his stance he started this garbage and the Deep State will use this as a hammer against a free people.

Gee, if the ChiComs aren't using TikTok data in any way, why would a ban of the platform result in any blip in relations whatsoever?

The only issue with Tic Tok is that the deep state does not have control of it.

That’s exactly why they are attempting to wrestle it away from the ChiComs and place it in the hands of their friends who can manipulate it (to their advantage).

My thoughts exactly. Our Government wants to get rid of an app because it's spying on Americans, our Government wouldn't dream of spying on us, oh wait......the hypocrisy is stunning.

I am always apprehensive, caresul and scared of any electronic device and/or software mfred in PRC. Even Cisco network devices are mfred in the PRC. It has been proven time and again that the Chicoms always use back doors in their hardware AND software.

The peculiar thing here is - take a look at who owns and controls the media and similar outlets in the country already:
Big Pharma
New York Times
Washington Post via Jeff Bezos
Lots of newspapers via Warren Buffett outfit
Facebark (LOL)
US Gov’t via Covid scared-you “health” advice/warnings
Rupert Murdoch
[feel free to add others]
This Tik-Tok legislation might have some merit. But it seems to me that it is just window dressing. (LOL The emperor’s new draperies?)

Don't like an app? Don't use it. Don't like a media outlet? Don't watch it. Don't like a newspaper? Don't read it.

Why is this so difficult? Let the market decide.

It’s not the Chinese commies who are creating the degenerate content, and selling the platform to an “American” corporation will not change that aspect of it.
