This article was first posted on FR back in 2001. It was 'locked-out' shortly there-after when JohnRob changed the software on FR.

I liked it so much, I've posted it again.

Wow! This almost reads like a detective novel. I can hardly wait for the next chapter. [I hope that there is one.]

The bit about Elizabeth Barber and the map puzzles me as much now as ever. I've read her book, and she puts the origin of these folks near Northeast Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran, between the Black Sea and the Caspian, which makes perfect sense historically, linguistically, and based on the archeology.

The Tarim Basin mummies are about 4000 years old. Celtic settlements in Salzberg and all that is later.

Fascinating reading. I saw a program on Discovery or TLC a few years back on these mummies, but I don't remember much speculation on their origins other than that of the Uyghurs, I believe it was. I'm glad you reposted it. Thanks.

Several early Chinese books, for example, described tall men with green eyes and red hair that resembled the fur of rhesus monkeys. Most scholars dismissed these accounts as legendary, but Mair wasn't so sure. He thought they were descriptions of Caucasian men. During his studies of Chinese mythology, he had found stories strikingly similar to those in early Greek and Roman tales. The parallels were too frequent to be mere coincidences.

Interesting...
