Roethlisberger not getting off motorcycle

ALAN ROBINSON / Associated Press Posted: 11 hours ago

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Despite Kellen Winslow Jr.'s accident and his own coach's admonition, Big Ben isn't hopping off his big bike just yet.

Ben Roethlisberger was lectured Friday by Steelers coach Bill Cowher on the dangers of riding a motorcycle without a helmet - as Roethlisberger has been spotted doing recently - but the quarterback isn't ready to get off his $20,000 cycle.

"He talked about being a risk taker and I'm not really a risk taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said as the Steelers opened their minicamp. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

Asked why he doesn't wear a helmet - something he wouldn't think about doing on a football field - Roethlisberger pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended two years ago.

"Obviously Pennsylvania doesn't think people need to (wear a helmet)," he said. "There's a law you've got to wear it in football."

Cowher didn't criticize Roethlisberger's riding, but is visibly uneasy with it.

"I certainly don't condone that," Cowher said. "It (playing pro football) is a very small time in your life and you've got to be very careful - you can see it documented with Kellen Winslow in Cleveland. There are choices and consequences ... not just in riding motorcycles, but where you go and who you associate with. You have control over them but once you make your decision, they control you."

If he's riding with Motorbikes for Christ and his buddies are prayin' for him, then I'd give him a pass on wearing a helmet.

I don't have the time to go through and read every one, but I've got a sticker on my helmet that I got years ago, from either Superbike or Fast Biles magazines (both are British motorcycle mags). It says (in small letters),

If you can read this, my head has come off, so it might be a good idea to call an ambulance.

I guess he's got enough millions now so that he can afford an accident that ends his career.

BTW - In my opinion, riding with a group of bikers is way more dangerous than riding alone.

He already looks like he's been dropped on his head a few times, so the risk of further damage is probably low.

Ride free!

Good for Ben ~ motorcycles are not dangerous.

When in doubt, add power!

Depends on how often they ride together. If they do daily breakfast of coffee rides, okay. But riding with a strange group, or with just one hot head, makes it far more dangerous then riding alone or with a friend.

Still, any way you cut it, I'm gonna die. If God spanks me for riding without a helmet, so be it. If the CA non-riding prejudices ever waiver helmets, I'll takes my chances.

Ride free, die free.

"If God spanks me for riding without a helmet, so be it."

I had a bike that I used almost exclusively for commuting to work during the mid 90's. Put about 34000 miles on it. I'd ridden bikes since 68. One grey morning in 96 I came around a curve for probably the 500th time. The fine pebbles spilled on the road blended in perfect. I was on the inside lane, and thankfully, no oncoming traffic. Wiped out, smacked my head pretty good. The helmet was trash. The bike was operational, so I went on to work. My boss told me to go home, but outside of a few bruises, I felt fine and stayed.

I've always used a helmet, appreciating the years since that crash, enjoying my family, and just plain living.

You can't live life to the fullest if you're dead.

I'm not sayin' I'd ride exclusively without a helmet. I'm just saying I want it to be MY choice, MY fault. The government has no right to assist insurance companies.

I hate seeing little kids riding their bicycles with helmets, elbow pads, knee pads, etc., etc., just because the government says so. (Now try and have fun in that equipment.)

Big brother is teaching them earlier and earlier.

I'd like to see the Detroit Lions all ride as a big group .....straight west into lake Michigan. They can ride with or without helmets, it makes no difference to me.

They'll be back. Just look at the Patriots and Red Sox. Anything can happen.

And yet you send them to school wearing a bullet proof tactical vest and a chastity belt and everyone gets all weird on you.
