HILLSBORO, N.D. - It's the thought that counts when it comes to a marriage proposal.

Chris Mueller, 25, was nearly finished etching the big question into a harvested soybean field when he realized the 'm' in 'marry' took up too much room.

Since he couldn't erase a plowed field, he had a decision to make.

"I figured it would look better to spell it wrong and get a laugh out of it, rather than botch it all," Mueller told the Grand Forks Herald. "I could have fit all the letters in, but it would have looked tacky."

Instead, it read: "KATIE WILL YOU MARY ME?"

I'm surprised she didn't ask "Who's Mary?".

Is this what Matt Lauer asks Katie Couric when he wants to play dress-up?

Leave off the question mark and he could have spelled it correctly. He's much at planning or problem solving. Hope she has the brains in the family and a nice inheritance.

Maybe she's like LuAnn Platter. If it doesn't work out, she can always become a born again virgin.

Mueller's father, Tom, twice used fieldwork to send romantic messages to his wife, Diane

Oh, give the guy a break, he comes from a romantic family.

Is "Mary" the new term for "Lewinsky"?

The gravestone for James Fennimore Cooper's wife contains, on the penultimate line of a poem, the word "grteful" with a caret and an "a" stuck in. Boy that would stink to be carving and get to the "t" and realize "oops" [it's a really big stone].

As for the extant case, I won't know whether he carved the letters in order, or if he did them in some other sequence. Otherwise I'd agree that leaving off the question mark would be a better idea than leaving off an "R".
