More than two months after Hurricane Katrina blew in, animals are still being found alive in New Orleans, pulled out of attics and from beneath flooring or off of the streets, where they’ve been surviving on sheer will and the kindness of strangers who leave food for them.
Some are little more than skin wrapped around bones. Starving, dehydrated and depressed, they still greet people trustingly, perhaps somehow recognizing that they represent salvation from their utterly bewildering circumstances.

It breaks my heart to think that there are still animals waiting for help. I cannot understand how people could leave their pets, NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCES.
And those people in the story with the doberman will definitely go to hell. Good responsible people would never do such a thing, and it is telling about how they live their daily lives that they would treat an innocent in such a way. A pox on their house.

My experience has been that after a couple of months, even the MOST grouchy adult kitty will at the very least tolerate a new kitten. And generally, once the kitten learns the pecking order, babies fit right in. It is harder to bring an adult kitty into the house, but I have NEVER had a long term problem with kittens.
Congratulations, and I am jealous! The face of a kitten is just angelic. Kitties just give me such peace and joy. All my current kitties, pictured on my page, are rescues.
You probably already know this, but just in case, don't let the kittens come in contact with your other cat until they've tested negative for FeLV and FIV. Even if the other cat is vaccinated, the vaccines aren't meant to protect against continued contact.

It's hard to find the words isn't it. I can almost understand fleeing and having to leave pets behind, but coming back and putting a sick dog out with the trash? Shouldn't they be prosecuted for animal cruelty?
We always have kittens cats needing homes in our local paper.......other than that, there are animal rescue places that desperatly need homes for all kinds of critters. Good luck in your search! : )
Actually, if the kittens appear healthy, I wasn't going to worry too much about letting them get acquainted around the place. They'll undoubtedly at least see, even if I don't let them touch, our old cat.
I'm more concerned about watching damage ~to~ them from the other kitty, and watching the dogs carefully, than I am them bringing something in with them. They've been at a home and been nowhere else yet, so I don't picture them being likely candidates for disease.

But I am not actively trying to add to my family. Sooner or later, another one will find me. I swear they run around telling their friends, "Hey, go find that lady! She'll take care of you"!.
Awwww, that is sooo sweet! Big ol boy you've got there. I love orange boys. They are good solid loving cats.

Hi Mr. Putty Cat. He is a beauty. I have three kittens on my deck that I have been feeding plus an array of stragglers that come for a bite. I must have a sign that says pussy lady on my lawn. I have four of my own in the house!
These trusting creatures turn their very existence over to us. All we have to do is make a place for them.

That's wonderful! Where can I get a copy? I'm sure that for most people who had to leave these loved ones behind, it must have been totally heart wrenching to have to do so.
Fortunately, our local SPCA will board your pet(s) during a hurricane.
What a beautiful cat. I need a good mouser too thanks to Katrina and Rita, they had more sense than the citizens of NOLA, that's unfortunate for me though. Ever since the hurricanes the vermin and creepy crawlies have been bad. That's the price of living in the country though.
My last cat, a Russian Blue, was useless as a mouser. She ran the other way if she saw a mouse. She was 18 when I had to put her to sleep in the spring due to a herniated disc. She was old but ruled the roost and kept the dogs in line. I am going to adopt an older cat from the shelter instead of getting a kitten because of the dogs.

I've always adopted older cats, or rather, had them adopt me. It's been ~years~ since I actually went out and looked for a cat, they usually just show up about the time I need one :~D And it's been since I was a kid since I've had my own kitten.
My old kitty does pretty well at mousing, but he uses the 'sit in one place and wait for a mouse to come by' method, which works well if he chooses a high traffic area of the barn, but we could use a more active hunter or two around also :~D
My dogs do really well at wanting to catch mice also, but they are too big to follow them into the crannies they need to go into.
