A Brick Township woman is free on $2 million bail as she awaits trial, accused of murdering her husband and disposing of his dismembered body parts in three suitcases.
Melanie McGuire, 32, posted bail Saturday and was released from the Middlesex County Jail.
She is charged with killing her husband, William T. McGuire.
William McGuire, 39, was killed between April 28 and May 5, 2004, according to his wife's indictment. Melanie McGuire shot her husband in their Woodbridge apartment, dismembered the body and placed the remains in black plastic trash bags inside three suitcases, according to court documents. The suitcases were found near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on May 5, 11 and 16, 2004.
The Virginia medical examiner determined that McGuire, a computer worker at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, was shot at least twice, once in the head and once in the chest.
He disappeared shortly after the McGuires closed on a new $500,000 home in Warren County. His car was found abandoned in Atlantic City.
Melanie McGuire was arrested June 2 and pleaded innocent. She faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.
Betcha they had "mortgage life" insurance on him and now that house is paid off.
Mortgage for life? I never heard of that! Is that why they mentioned the 500,000 home they just bought before he was killed?
Not "mortgage for life" - "mortgage life" - i.e. you take out an insurance policy that pays enough to pay off your mortgage if you die, so your family won't have to worry about mortgage payments.
So do you think that is what happened here? Why else mention the house they just bought?
McGuire was arrested in June, 13 months after William McGuire's body washed up in three suitcases near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia.
The Virginia medical examiner determined that McGuire was shot at least twice, once in the head and once in the chest.
You've never heard of "mortgage life" insurance? It pays off the loan in the event of the death of the mortgage holder(s). In this case, they were probably both on the mortgage, but the death of either one would pay off the loan. If they had such a policy, it certainly would provide motive.
Joseph Tacopina, McGuire's high-profile defense attorney, confirmed last night the 33-year-old registered nurse had been released.
"People who she has obviously done good things for in her profession and in her personal relationships have stepped up to the plate and made a considerable bail package for her," said Tacopina, an attorney who has gained fame for the clients he has defended and for TV appearances he has made.
McGuire worked for Reproductive Medical Associates in Morristown, a fertility clinic, prior to her arrest.

No, I never heard of that before.
Then he dies right after the home purchase closes.
She's pretty _______ stupid.
First things police are going to look at when someone goes missing are the spouse for foul play and the decedent's job/finances for possible suicide motives.
And she hid the evidence so well that his remains were found within days after she murdered him.
Well, no one can say that she can't accessorize.
and in matching luggage it seems. :P
The bond was secured by friends putting up tdeeds to their property, which implies a high drgree of trust, or stupidity, on their part. The cost of a commercial bond is 10% of the amount or $200,000 which is a lot of $$$ to toss out..
Appreciate the insight :)
I am a bit offended at the tone of these replies. I know Melanie personally and she is not what the press is making her out to be. She is also innocent until proven guilty, and thus far all evidance is circumstancial.
