Yanks cap sweep with longest game ever

BOSTON --Derek Jeter hit a bases-clearing double in New York's seven-run seventh inning as the Yankees rallied from a three-run deficit to beat the Boston Red Sox 14-11 and complete a sweep of Friday's day-night doubleheader.

Johnny Damon had six of New York's 34 hits on the day, including a pair of two-run homers. Bobby Abreu had four hits to lead the Yankees to a 12-4 victory in the early game, then added two more in the sequel as the Yankees opened a season-high 3 1/2-game lead in the AL East.

The night game, at 4 hours, 45 minutes, was the longest nine-inning game in major league history, surpassing the 4:27 it took the Dodgers and Giants to play on Oct. 5, 2001.

And that was on top of a 3:55 day game.

Jeter had three hits in the opener but was hitless in the second until lining one down the right-field line against Mike Timlin (5-3) to give New York the lead for good at 11-10. Mike Myers (1-0) got just two outs -- David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez -- but had the good fortune of being in the game when the Yankees broke out.

Ortiz hit his major league-leading 43rd homer in the ninth to cut the deficit to three runs against Mariano Rivera. Alex Rodriguez then botched Ramirez's grounder for his 22nd error, tied for the major league lead

Who did the Red Sox trade for Hinske?

Not a bad get, but it looks like their pitching staff is worn out. Timlin is getting shelled, and the little I saw of Jason Johnson, the only pitch he could throw for a strike was an 87 mph fastball that didn't have any movement.

I think you hit it right on the nose. The loss of Veritek is killing the staff too.

On a positive note, the Jimmy Fund radio/TV telethon raised about $3 million. Donald Trump stopped by the radio booth and, informed that they were $60,000 shy of tying last year's 2.4 million, immediately tossed the 60k on the table. Others contributing included former Sox ace Roger Clemens (#21 gave $21,000), Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs, George Steinbrenner, etc.

Kevin Hench: "As for Mike Timlin, hope he enjoyed the World Baseball Classic because he sure must not be having fun in this playoff fade. Since he hit the wall in early July he's been getting battered to the tune of a 7.23 ERA in his last 18 appearances. "

THE END OF AN "ERROR" (E-5):

Shilling and Wells have the next two starts against the Yanks. Both pitchers last time had good outings. The BoSox need these two guys to come through...

To bastardize the Diamondback saying, "Wells and Schilling, and the good Lord willing."

Not a fan of the Red Sox(I'm a Twins man), but they're going to have to have a radical shift of some sort to make the playoffs.

What happened to Willy Mo Pena? Did he have a good first half, when Boston was rolling? I thought he was a great free agent pick up, but he's looked harmless everytime I've watched him.

Willy Mo was on the DL for at about a qtr of the season. He's has had his moments. His batting average is still above .300. I'd say he's been streaky for the most part as a BoSox - alternatating between semi-hot and cold.

So far, Shilling has had his stuff today, but the game is now in a rain delay. The Red Sox are 2-to-zip over the Yanks - top of the 3rd inning.
