I grew up in the Portland area, but this is my home. Even though I live in town, I have a creek in my front yard and the best neighbors in the world. The people are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. Downtown is always pretty, but at Christmas it's magical at night. In the spring a pair of ducks hang out in the creek and they get fat since everyone feeds them. I love it here.

The old boy network in town has been reamed. The last election tossed out three incumbents who were part of the pro development group and the three new members have changed the dynamics of the city council. Plus, the new city manager is a straight shooter, honest and ethical who is already making himself felt. With Useless leaving the new city attorney will change things even more, as he has a rep of being dead honest.

I sit and watch the salmon, the beaver, and "my" otter. This critter actually came up and slept on the deck on afternoon. Amazing place.

We should remember him by BEING PREPARED.

NOBODY with hypothermia throws off his clothes!!! He was throwing off his daughter's skirt, etc., to leave a trail. Please don't be so ignorant!!!!

You're mistaken. Many accounts of deaths on Everest state that the deceased are found naked, as the late stages of hypothermia will lead to sensations of overheating. That coupled with the effects of altitude result in people tearing their clothing off.

I had never heard of it either, but apparently it does happen.

From here:

Patients who become slightly hypothermic have altered judgment (referred to being "cold stupid" by some laypersons), and they can exhibit bizarre behavior such as paradoxical undressing, in which they remove clothing despite the cold. This behavior may exacerbate heat loss, creating a downward cycle to worsening hypothermia.

I don't see any quote at your link that resembles the one you "quoted."

There was nothing at your link with those words.

Yes...I agree. But in addition, for those almost inevitable times, when we all encounter circumstances for which we are not prepared, we can also remember him for the decisions he made during those tragic events that allowed his wife and daughters to live.

Check his link again.....it's about half way down the page.

"Patients who become slightly hypothermic experience altered judgment (referred to being cold stupid by some mountaineers).

They can exhibit bizarre behavior such as paradoxical undressing, where they remove clothing. This behavior may worsen heat loss, creating a vicious cycle.

The author has personal experience in trying to care for a mountaineer with hypothermia who was throwing off his coat and resisting efforts to be warmed. The ambient temperature was 15°F in a snowstorm.

Now there have been posted plenty of info and links to prove you are plain wrong, yet I have not see you acknowledge that . There is no reason to make other people feel bad or to call what they post ignorant or twaddle. Everyone is saddened by Mr Kim's passing and the fact this had to happen. Hopefully now people will become more aware of what to keep in their cars and to check in, and how to survive if this were to happen to them. Prayers for the Kim family.~~Pandora~~

Thanks for the link but I really think there is little more to say about this anymore. Mr Kim is gone, he made a heroic effort to save his family and thankfully his wife and girls are alive. The best thing now is to hope vandals will think twice before cutting locks, police will do more checks of such areas and people will have learned a lesson so Mr Kim did not die in vain. I was not looking to fight with you Paulat at all. If I seemed to be it was not meant that way. I usually enjoy you posts. Have a great night. ~~Pandora~~

It's there, about 1/4 of the way down the page. Search for "paradoxical".

an update to your thread...........looks like no 'vandals' involved.

Gate to road Kims used never locked, BLM says

Federal workers failed to lock the gate that was supposed to block the logging road that led James Kim to his death last week -- a different story than has been told since his death and his family's rescue.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management was supposed to lock the gate to the spur road, known only as 34-8-36, on Nov. 1. The winter gate is meant to stop people from turning off Bear Camp Road, which cuts through the rugged Siskiyou National Forest to the Oregon Coast.

Thats really a shame then. I hope people will think more clearly when they are traveling in areas they aren't familiar with. I hope they will pack their car with items that will help them survive something like what happened to the Kim family. It is better to be safe then sorry. It seems so hard to believe that in this day and age something like this could even happen, 9 days stranded. Thank God the wife and 2 girls were saved. Prayers for the Kims.

I grew up in the area (Bandon), I've driven that road a few times but it was many years ago.

I read some of the news reports on this case and a few of them said that the road was paved.

Is that accurate? It certainly wasn't a paved road back when I drove it but then as I said that was many years ago.

Taking that route in poor weather wasn't very bright. I wonder if the Kim's spoke with anyone about their travel plans and the route they were planning to take.

The resort they were driving to doesn't suggest that anyone take that route even in clear weather. They advise anyone driving over from Grants Pass to take the highway that drops you off on 101 just south of the Oregon border. They don't even mention the route the Kim's take and don't show it on their map. I would think that any local would have advised against taking that route.
