Scientists believe they have discovered the secret behind the work of Claude Monet, one of the founders of Impressionist painting.
The artist is known to have suffered from cataracts but new research shows how much and for how long this could have had an effect and how it may have produced his distinctive style.
Researchers recreated Monet's Water-Lily Pond as he would have seen it. The pond was the subject of a series of canvases which Monet exhibited in 1900 at the age of 60.

It’s wonderful. Monet took a possible handicap and made it into a thing of beauty. Can anything be more inspiring?
However, Monet painted things in his own garden. You can visit the place anytime.
He moved around (just like a normal human being), and looked at things from different vantage points, off and on, over a long period of time.
Monet knew what the pond, the lillies and the bridge in the garden looked like.
That means his visual problem occurred when he looked at his canvas on the easel.
He might well have had some problems with his palette ~ cataracts can be fun, of course, particularly when you get to the point where you have 3 to 5 overlapping images, of different intensities and hues.
Best to have your lens removed and replaced with a modern appliance.

This is not new. I took an Art Appreciation course back in the early 70’s and the teacher suggested that his eye sight was poor.
So now, when I look at Impressionist paintings, I always remove my glasses so I can get a better sense of what the artist might have seen.
